European gas prices recently went above ?58 per megawatt hour ? the equivalent of $100 per barrel of oil. This is "absolutely destructive for energy-intensive manufacturing", in the words of one industry analyst.

Any electrician knows that Lego bricks are genderless, not 'heteronormative', because each can 'mate' with any other. Perhaps Science Museum staff should study to be electricians and actually make themselves useful.

offsite link Why All Parents Should Protest Against the Children?s Wellbeing and Schools Bill Tue Feb 11, 2025 18:14 | Elizabeth Dulley
Any parent can currently withdraw their child from school if they're unhappy. Labour's Schools Bill ends that right for many, giving local authorities a veto. That's why all parents should protest against this state power grab.

For the second time in a very short period, the Israeli police have begun an investigation against the Indymedia Israel organization. The first investigation was instigated by the Israeli Ministry of Communication. The present investigation is in reference to an article which had been deleted from the website newswire. The complaints being made to the police must be seen as part of a wider campaign being carried out by certain right-wing interests, against both the democratic right to free speech and the right to privacy, with the broader intent to quash any form critical dialogue. ... read full story / add a comment

By comparing Sinn Fein to Le Pen, Ruairi Quinn conflates the anti-imperialism of the republican movement with the ultra-nationalism of European imperialism. He shows his ignorance of Irish history and the deep, organic connection to that history of Irish republicanism, especially its struggle on behalf of those dispossessed by the genocidal depradations of English imperialism. To-day the Travelling people in Kerry have publicly supported Martin Ferris. The racist Immigration Platform has singled out Sinn Fein for criticism because of Sinn Fein's support for refugees and immigrants. Fat-cat Quinn purports to lead a 'Labour' Party, but his ignorant remarks show that the republican movement is the true repository of the radical, republican, socialist anti-imperialism of James Connolly, whilst Quinn and his party are on the side of the propertied, possessing, priveleged class,- to which Quinn himself belongs. ... read full story / add a comment

Climate Change is happening and will get worse. Peat is the worst offender(worse than oil or coal)though on a global scale doesn't matter. Ireland has a commitment under Kyoto to cap its increace its Greenhouse Gas Emmissions at 13% above 1990 levels by 2010. At current rate of growth they will increace emmissions by 40%. The Celtic Tiger has no small role to play in this. The govt. could do a lot about this and has great plans such as carbon taxes which will a long time to fruition(you thought the plastic bags took a long time:-)). Today though they may as well have thrown those plans in the bin. Lip service how are ye? Then theres destruction to peatland, and a a whole gamut of knock on effects. After the media coverage of the heckling at Liberty hall on Mayday, and the subsequent debate about who runs GR, some of us felt it was necessary to clarify our position as a group. It was decided at our last meeting that this letter should be send to Des Geraghty. This in no way negates the right of any individual to hold their own opinions and voice them as they see fit. Des Geraghty is to be invited to speak at a meeting so that anyone who wishes to raise issues with him may do so in person. ... read full story / add a comment

The Journo is alledged to have obstructed the guard during an altercation in which a protester is alledged to have struck the Guard with a stick. The Journo is pleading not guilty to three charges: breach of the peace, obstruction and unlawful possession of a card-type Swiss army knife. My close colleague came back into the office on Thursday afternoon, the end of our workweek, still in uniform with his M-16 and pistol on him. This was the day that the IDF left the Jenin refugee camp to reassemble in the area, returning to the status quo that existed before the Passover Eve Massacre, in which so many at the Park Hotel in Netanya were murdered by a suicide bomber. He was called up for emergency reserve duty (they call it an Order-8, or tzav shmona) and is the officer in charge of the military field infirmary, assigned to the reserve unit who lost the nine soldiers in that one incident last week. So what I'm passing on here was told directly to me, just hours after he left the Jenin area, while in Yokneam, 19 kilometers from Jenin (where we both work and he lives). I didn't record his ... read full story / add a comment
