N. Chomsky on the likelihood of a USA attack on Iran: "They're desperate. Everything they touch is in ruins. They're even in danger of losing control over Middle Eastern oil. [...] Under these circumstances, they're unpredictable. They might go for broke, and hope they can salvage something from the wreckage." You don't have to be Harry Houdini to get away from the clutches of the cops at the Rossport protests, since it seems their hearts are not in the role of protesting Shell shareholders' interests as much as they once were. Last January the US "global" newspaper "The International Herald Tribune" ran a short story on rumours that the Venezuelan government were going to restrict future parents in the state of the same name to a list of 100 names. As a story it was surprisingly good & even though in my humble opinion it came up to the scratch of the now near institutionalised regular the funny names foreigners & enemies give their spawn stakes it wasn't really picked up no by either pro+Chav or anti-Chav factions in the worldwide socialist or antisocialist family. During the summer commercial media turned their attention again to the delightful parents of mythic China who have been struggling through the much maligned courts of that land for the right to call their baby boy "@ at" which as well as being the international internet protocol for email addresses approximates to the mandarin form "is loved". Then the Venezuelan silly name story came back. ... read full story / add a comment

The Atlantic Homecare outlet on Childers Road, Limerick that earlier this year removed all Israeli produce from its shelves (in response to a protest by the IPSC) now appears to be redoubling its effort to sell as much Israeli made Keter produce as possible to unsuspecting customers. In what appears to be a clear attempt to at least distract, if not completely mislead customers, they have a large poster on a Keter shed with the slogan "Irish Owned - make it Irish make it Atlantic ..." ... read full story / add a comment

A young member of Ógra Sinn Féin last Saturday night noticed that a building was flying a Union Flag in Newcastle, County Down Ireland. This "butcher's apron" flag is of course offensive to many Irish people, and since the building belonged to the avowedly sectarian "Orange Order" the young man decided that the best way to peacefully protest was to scale the building and remove the offending symbol. Sadly, after removing the flag, the young ÓSF member lost his footing and fell from the roof, injuring his arm. He has received medical treatment and is recovering. ... read full story / add a comment
Fatima Regeneration Project Phase 2 is again plunged into turmoil as a consequence of Developer P.Elliott/Maplewood acting in contravention of agreement with local residents despite their co-operation in what could be only best described as a un selfish act of burden bearing by a minority of residents in order to achieve benefits that would be by and large enjoyed by many people some from far wider afield from their local community. ... read full story / add a comment |
