This is a story that the Trottie Socialist Workers Party (Ireland) tried desperately to suppress and to prevent ever going public. All SWP members had to sign a declaration of secrecy that they would never release this to the media. But I'm giving you this bombshell news here and now - the SWP (Ireland) will be disbanded at 12 midnight tonight (Friday June 21ST). ... read full story / add a comment

Dear Friends, We are inviting organisations across Europe to endorse the enclosed letter to the press. We are submitting the letter for publication to coincide with the British Parliament debate on the latest government Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Bill, on 11 & 12 June, and with Refugee Week which is starting on Saturday 15 June. As the main parties all over Europe adopt the extreme immigration policies of the extreme right, our opposition must also be Europe wide. We hope you will add your organisation to this letter. Please get back to us as soon as possible so we can compile the list which will be circulated at various actions during Refugee Week. Please forward to other groups in your networks. Yours sincerely, Nina Lopez-Jones, co-ordinator ... read full story / add a comment

THOUSANDS OF building workers downed tools and walked off sites throughout Germany to demand a 4.5% pay rise. The strikers are also demanding a rise in the minimum pay rate for workers in the former Eastern Germany. The strike called by the 900,000-strong IG Bau union is the country's first construction workers strike since 1945 and follows a series of labour strikes in recent weeks. As reported in The Socialist (Issues 254/255) the metalworkers' trade union, IG Metall, launched a rolling regional programme of strikes over pay. Eventually, a 22-month deal was agreed by the union's leadership which fell short of the union's official demand for a 6.5% pay rise. The strike is significant as it follows a massive 98% vote for action by union members and comes at a time of severe recession in the construction industry. The strike also comes just three months ahead of the general election, much ... read full story / add a comment

Last night, over 50 people met in a local hotel in Ballaghaderreen, to talk about the plans to build a massive “superdump” in the area. Behind the turbulent news from Israel, a struggle for historical truth has passed almost unnoticed outside academic circles; yet its wider significance is epic. In May 1948, more than 200 Palestinians were killed by the advancing Jewish militia in the coastal village of Tantura, south of Haifa. According to the recorded testimony of 40 witnesses, both Arab and Jewish, half the civilians were shot in a "rampage". The rest were marched to the beach, where the men were separated from the women and children. They were taken to a wall near the mosque where they were shot in the back of the head. ... read full story / add a comment
