Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU) Motion calling on the Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) to revert to having their annual May Day as normal On May Day, May 1ST this year (2004) was only thrown out by the narrowest of margins (11-10) at the DCTU Monthly General Delegates meeting last night (Tuesday the 13TH, unlucky for some, I.E. The DCTU).

The turnout was much smaller than normal due to the continuing difficulties with the postal service, and there were 2 delegates that I know, who would have voted for the ATGWU Motion had they have known of last night's DCTU meeting in advance, and this would have forced the DCTU into a very embarrassing climbdown. ... read full story / add a comment

There were angry scenes at today's INTO conference when delegates attacked the union's endorsement of a 'killer coke' stand in the conference foyer at the main entrance to the conference.

Handwritten posters protesting Killer coke were distributed around the conference. A petition was circulated among the delegates and a number of speakers denounced the stand to loud applause.

One delegate, John McAnulty of East Down INTO, halted the business of conference under standing orders to demand the removal of the stand.

He condemned what he claimed was a deliberate policy of support for coke - one third of INTO Northern delegates had voted for a boycott, The union had been contacted by Columbian trade unionists and were well aware of the boycott call. They were also aware of the debate in the trade union movement and that even unions opposed to the boycott stopped well short of actually supporting or promoting coke.

The union leaders have promised a statement later ... read full story / add a comment

The SWP are rumoured to be still considering standing Richard Boyd Barrett in the Euro election. From the establishment parties, FF are running two candidates, Labour also are running two, Fine Gael on and the PD's are still considering whether or not to stand. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign has launched a petition from politicians calling on the European Council and the European Council of Foreign Ministers to insist that Israel cease construction of the separation wall across Palestinian land on the West Bank. If Israel does not comply, the petition says, then the human rights clause in the EU-Israel trade agreement should be invoked to suspend Israel's favourable trading rights with the EU. ... read full story / add a comment

The IAWM is apparently intent on revamping itself after resignations, expulsions, disaffiliations and growing disillusionment has seriously affected an organisation now no more than a front for the Socialist Workers Party. The meeting has been announced on the IAWM website but has yet to be sent by email to members/affliates. The announcement has not been posted on Indymedia.

Members/affiliates have been given 13 days to submit resolutions along with nominations for a steering committee election (a new steering committee is required after the existing one lost half its membership through resignations). 13 days may be enough for SWP/IAWM ghost branches to discuss resolutions/nominations, but is wholly inadequate for genuine/functioning anti-war groups affiliated to the IAWM. The agenda itself is typically weighted in favour of SWP tutorials, with only 1 hour given over to resolutions/election to the steering committee, and 1 hour to discuss a constitution for the IAWM. ... read full story / add a comment
