mayo / crime and justice Thursday July 21, 2011 - 12:59 by Bob
Early Thursday morning at 3am Mayo County Council illegally removed a caravan from private property in Aughoose, opposite Shell's temporary compound. People from the Rossport Solidarity Camp were woken by the noise and ran down to the road in pyjamas to find their caravan being loaded onto a flatbed trailer. The gardaí present said to "take it up with the County Council" if there was a problem. When questioned as to why they were doing it at 3am if the removal of the caravan was lawful, there was no response. ... read full story / add a comment

Over 60 people attended a meeting of those opposed to proposed gas fracking in the north-west at the Mayflower in Drumshambo, Co. Leitrim on the night of July 12th. The major concerns raised at the meeting were organisational, with the –still nameless- group agreeing to the formation of a ‘core group which isn’t called a core group’.
Editor: Fracking is technology used for extracting natural gas trapped in rocks underground and is the process of forcing liquids and solids into the rock and forcing it to crack and thereby releasing the gas. Fracking liquids can cause pollution and the process of cracking the rock can significantly drop the water table and dry out huge areas. It has many other problems including exponential fall-off in production from year 1. ... read full story / add a comment

It is this time of year again when the spectre of sectarianism and division comes to the fore in the north of Ireland. It is a time when communities, kerbstones and poles are marked and carved into territory. There are those who will be living in fear and silenced from speaking out while the rest of us are told to turn the other check in the interests of peace and stability. It is unfortunate, if perhaps somewhat inevitable, that the now annual battles around the ‘marching season’ fall along religious lines. The Orange parades are being used to test the supposed 'neutrality' of the northern regime and the PSNI in particular. The losing side in this dangerous game however is likely to be the working class, as the confrontations and the sectarian attacks that occur around the Orange marches drive people further into ‘their own’ communities. ... read full story / add a comment

Thirty one prosecutions of an innocent man, followed by perjury, cover up, scandalous conduct by judges, barristers, solicitors, Courts Service and DPP's office, assaults by Gardaí etc - there was a long story to tell about the shameless judicial system in Ireland outside our Houses of Parliament two days ago. This story is one that could also come under the Rights and Freedom heading as well as under "Crime and Justice". Kevin Tracey has been the victim of criminal behaviour but he has also been deprived of his human rights and of freedom to live a normal life with his family in peace. ... read full story / add a comment

The 15 M movement in Madrid is a broad one which at one moment raises general slogans of an apparently reformist kind and the next is calling for the capitalists to pay the costs of the crisis it created and for a general strike. It is energetic and coming up with different methods of internal democracy in the neighbourhood assemblies and central coordination and adapting traditional methods of protest. On the 19th streams of people marched from many different areas and met at the Neptuno monument, near the Spanish parliament. ... read full story / add a comment

Yesterday, one Corrib campaigner was hospitalised and several other injured as Gardaí stood by and allowed IRMS to assault and violently remove a group of people that had peacefully sat in front of the doors of the Shell offices in Belmullet. One member of the group had to be brought by ambulance from Belmullet to Castlebar by ambulance after being hit in the back by a IRMS security guard, while another protester was punched in the face by IRMS senior supervisor Derek Bolger. ... read full story / add a comment |
