IT WAS 80 years ago that fascism first came to power, and it happened in Italy. There is a myth that Benito Mussolini seized power after his March on Rome and the occupation of the city by his fascist shock troops. Fascist columns did assemble at four points near the city-but they were lightly armed, ill fed and left standing in the rain. ... read full story / add a comment

THE EUROPEAN Social Forum (ESF) in Florence, Italy, vastly exceeded even the most optimistic predictions. It did not just succeed-it was a political triumph. Around 60,000 people took part in the three days of meetings leading up to the anti-war demonstration. People came from every continent, and from 105 countries. There were students and trade unionists, unemployed people and pensioners, activists and campaigners. ... read full story / add a comment

The European integration is a modern social force of politico-economic dynamics sweeping across the Europe. The EU agenda on environment and social policy is inspiring. The Monetary Union is controversial. It is presumptuous to prognosticate a natural trajectory of the EU and its relations with the Britain. ... read full story / add a comment

Last Friday while making my way to the European Social Forum (ESF) in Florence, Italy, where a million people (according to the organisers)peacefully marched against the imminent war against Iraq I experienced at first hand the lack of democracy and respect for human rights within the EU. The Schengan Agreement is supposed to guarantee the free movement of all EU citizens within EU states. However, the bus I was travelling in, which was part of the mobilisation for the ESF from Spain, was stopped at the French-Italian border. Our passports were taken by the border police and within 15 minutes they returned and asked for me to leave the bus and go with them. I was then stripsearched, the contents of my bags emptied on the floor, and later photographed. Completely confused and startled I asked the police why all this was being done to me. They gave no reason. Later, ... read full story / add a comment

Before anyone goes along with the "wholesome" sounding anti-smoking crusade...please consider that this stuff HELPS the cigarette industry and their many ingredients suppliers, advertisers, insurers and investors...and gov't officials who allowed typical cigarettes to be so contaminated with dangerous, toxic, fire-starting, cancer-causing non-tobacco adulterants. A war against Iraq could kill half a million people, warns a new report (Collateral Damage) by medical experts - and most would be civilians. The report claims as many as 260,000 could die in the conflict and its three-month aftermath, with a further 200,000 at risk in the longer term from famine and disease. A civil war in Iraq could add another 20,000 deaths. Collateral Damage is being published on Tuesday 12 November 02 in 14 countries.
