Solar farms are an ecological disaster. Birds frequently fly into them, mistaking them for water, while electrocution and incineration are common. But you won't hear about this in the mainstream media, says Chris Morrison.

The Cork Anti-War Campaign will host a public meeting on the current war in the Congo at 8pm on Thursday, 26 June, at Isaac's Hotel on McCurtain Street. All welcome! Speakers will include Bernadette McGonigle (chairperson of Amnesty International in Ireland) and Pierrot Ngandi (chairperson of the Congolese-Irish Partnership). There will be plenty of time for discussion. Between 3.5 and 4.5 million people have died since 1998 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a result of war. It is a conflict that, by and large, has been ignored in Western Europe, and needs to be addressed by the global anti-war movement. What occurred in Rwanda in 1994 could recur in the DCR on a greater scale and the international community appears to be little more than vaguely interested. For information phone Fintan Lane at 087 1258325 ... read full story / add a comment

The growing anger amongst Assyrians is leading to greater calls for Kurdish withdrawal not just from recently occupied villages but the over 250 other villages in northern Iraq held by Kurds. Another Assyrian activist noted "These villages constitute the Assyrian heartland and should form the very nucleus of a future Assyrian local self-administrative area needed to protect Assyrian survival in any future Iraq. For Assyrians to survive and thrive in the new Iraq, such areas need to be preserved as an Assyrian sanctuary- free from threat and intimidation." ... read full story / add a comment

Picture a hypothetical battlefield. There are two opposed armies at opposite ends of a field. On the right, you see ‘The Army Of Darkness’, a well organised, well paid and well disciplined army all marching under one flag and generally looking pretty scary. On monday 16th of june, after 15 years of non violent resistance the neighbours of the village of Itoiz are being evicted violently by the Spanish para military police: The Guardia Civil. Itoiz lies on the heart of the Longuida Valley which the Spanish Gouvernment and the Navarrian Regional Gouvernment want to flood despite the inhabitants opposition. After the tragic eviction of Nagore two months ago where a man, his family and his cattle were kicked out of their house and had to watch the bulldozers destroying the house they had inhabited for generations. Now 30 people are in Itoiz, a new symbol of resistance of the neoliberal reforms of land and people allocation. The people were into two buildings of the village and the police is arresting them one by one. Itoitz lies in Navarra, in the north of Iruñea - Pamplona, once the village will be emptied and distroyed ... read full story / add a comment

Those reasons are sketched out in a post in comments from me. Keep in Mind Duritti is obviously hanging around on the lists that organise the site and knows this complexity exists).
