(12:59) Two bombs exploded outside the police headquarters in the north Italian port city of Genoa early today, smashing windows but causing no injuries. The blasts occurred about 10 minutes apart around 4.00am local time. Police believe the second, bigger, bomb was designed to injure officers investigating the first. advertisement advertisement 'The people who set these bombs wanted to hit police while they were investigating,' Genoa's police chief Oscar Fioriolli told reporters, adding that there had been no claims of responsibility. Investigators are leaning towards the theory that the bombs could have been set by the Albanian mafia, some of whose members are currently on trial in Genoa, or by extremists in the anti-globalisation movement. Italian police last week arrested 21 people in connection with violence perpetrated during the Group of Eight summit in Genoa last year. ... read full story / add a comment

Last week (3 & 4 Dec), Irish Examiner journalist, Michael O’Farrell, revealed that the Hewlett-Packard plant in Galway (recently Compaq, and before that, Digital), was producing vital software for nuclear weaponry in both the US and France. The Galway Alliance Against War responded on Thursday evening (05/12/02) with a hastily-organised protest. Twenty members of the group, in the guise of ‘weapons inspectors’ went to the plant in Ballybrit, to demand that all work on weapons of mass destruction be discontinued. We were prevented by security from passing the front gate, but our action got extensive coverage in the local media -Galway Bay FM, Galway Advertiser, TG4- and some in the national media. Since our protest, further information about the Hewlett-Packard programme has been brought to our attention, Follow-up activities are planned therefore. ... read full story / add a comment

From ‘NO QUARTER’, magazine of Anti-Fascist Action, Ireland. More information at: http://www.geocities.com/irishafa Loyalists and Fascists Links between Unionists/Loyalists in the North and British Fascists go back over 80 years. As far back as the 1920s the 'British Fascisti' set up a group in Co. Down which led a pogrom against catholics and in the 1930s members of the Glasgow fascist gang the 'Billy Boys' visited Belfast to take part in sectarian rioting during the 12th of July weekend. However this article will focus on links in recent years. (Some people on indymedia seem to be unaware that it is Loyalism which has links with Fascism.
