It should be obvious that the above title is an oxymoron, because Israel is good, only a victim, not a victimizer, besides which Israel is a U.S. client and friend. Who can gauge the striking-power of an impassioned daydream, of pleasure taken in love, of a nascent desire, of a rush of sympathy? Everyone seeks spontaneously to extend such brief moments of real life; everyone wants basically to make something out of their everyday life. Everyday life is the measure of all things: of the fulfillment or rather the non-fulfillment of human relations; of the use of lived time; of artistic experimentation; of revolutionary politics. ... read full story / add a comment

For tonight’s protest to be a success I think it must be a sit-down. It’s the only way we will still be able to make our voices heard and dramatically reduce the chances of violence erupting. We will be protesting about police brutality. We are not Reclaiming the Streets tomorrow, or globalising resistance or propounding Socialist values, we are expressing our outrage against the way the Guarda used horrendous force against innocent people. A well placed whisper is more effective than shouting...tomorrow is about numbers and not falling into the trap of being manipulated into seeming hypocritical. We absolutely cannot give the Guarda the chance to say "look what we are dealing with" and have people sympathise. If you are a leader of GR, SWP or RTS and you read this and agree please organise people and get the word out. Sorry if I'm repeating a suggestion already made. ... read full story / add a comment

Like many others I greatly enjoyed Joan Denise Moriarty's production of The Playboy of the Western World with the Irish National Ballet. It was a lovely combination of quality literature by Synge, unique music by the ever-inventive Chieftains, wonderful classical ballet and creative choreography. Great stuff. The success or otherwise of the late Irish National Ballet Company and the new, exciting Ballet Ireland depends most of all on sound classical ballet training and all the hardship that such dedication demands. "Do we need Ballet Ireland?" Yes we do. ... read full story / add a comment
