Determined that there should be SOME kind of opposition in the Stormont Assembly, Eamonn McCann has agreed to stand for election to the Assembly. He points out that while the other parties are at each others' throats all the time about 'constitutional' issues, they are at one in implementing the neo-liberal agenda of privatisation and public sector cuts. As for imperialism, he argues that "The fight against imperialism in 2003 is a fight against US-led imperialism across the globe, or it is nothing. Those who welcome Bush as “a friend of Ireland” position themselves on the side of imperialism." ... read full story / add a comment

{"for being in the main women, {"for demonstrating how to stop redundancy" {"for leaping from the most brutal of oppression and being an example of dignity, The Workers of Brukman were converted into a symbol and pendant of Argentina in the world"} Many readers will remember the events in Argentina two years ago, and with good reason, the failure of the banking system could not easily be kept from the Television screens. But for those who don't, on two keys night of 2001 Argentina went into a popular revolt and assemblies and collectives throughout the country inspired the world yet again. ... read full story / add a comment

It was resolved at the recent AGM of the IAWM "to establish an expert legal committee (either independently organised or in affiliation) to advise the movement on legal strategies to advance its aims" these broadly being to hold the Irish Government accountable to Law, to end Irish participation in wars abroad and reverse the increasing militarisation and repression at home. We therefore invite all interested legal professionals to attend a meeting at The Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Sq. Dublin 1, at 2pm on Saturday 8th November 2003, to discuss and launch this initiative. See below for full details of event. N.B. this is an extraordinary meeting intended only for qualified legal professionals - following the discussion a full account of the proceedings will be published here. ... read full story / add a comment

At a press conference in New York's plush Plaza hotel, David Lynch launched a $1 billion fundraising campaign to build 100 'peace palaces' across America, part of a plan for 3,000 buildings across the globe, one in each major city. Inside the palaces up to 300 devotees will spend their time meditating and 'yogic flying', which practitioners say is a form of levitation. Once the peace palaces are up and running - the theory goes - war, violence and crime will come to an end. ... read full story / add a comment |
