Today in Mayo activists from Shell to Sea disrupted the peat haulage process which has been going on since the beginning of April. In what was seen as a reconnaissance, a small group of protesters arranged to have a close look at the situation, and see if they could lock themselves on to the Iggy Madden haulage trucks as they passed. Heavy-handed Garda tactics meant that none of the attempts were successful, although some were close enough to make those involved confident that the process of stripping the peat can be stopped by peaceful direct action protest methods. ... read full story / add a comment

The other day I received through my door a booklet on Fine Gael's Lucinda Creighton. The name rang a bell for one main reason. A lady of 29 years facing eviction last October and three emails I sent to Lucinda Creighton. I ask where is this woman's humanity towards the vulnerable people, she is supposed to represent in Dublin 4. ... read full story / add a comment

Venezuela has an interesting relationship with the energy giant Shell. They actually force them to pay taxes, and when they submit estimates which the govt doesn't believe, they audit them and present them with a bill. Today they told Shell to pay back over thirteen million dollars that the company was trying to weasel out of from 2005. The Irish government, of course, has a more compliant attitude to the big energy companies... ... read full story / add a comment

A new ‘probability-based’ report, prepared for England’s Ministry of Defence by Rear Admiral Chris Parry, warns of the dangers to political stability which may present themselves during the 2030s. Competition for scarce resources and climate change in a context of growing population will fuel the continuing conflict in the Middle East and possibly give rise to conflict between Islam and an economically-vibrant and still-atheist China. ‘Terrorism’ will be facilitated by technological developments. ... read full story / add a comment

Opponents of Germany’s main dump for highly radioactive nuclear waste are crying foul over a deal the environment minister is proposing. The deal would be to resume exploration of a salt deposit as a final repository if the minister’s opponents agree to a wider search for alternative sites. Local opponents to dumping near the northern village of Gorleben point out that since the early 80s there has been scientific proof that the salt dome there cannot prevent atomic waste from entering the biosphere because it lacks rock cover. ... read full story / add a comment

The Raytheon 9 appeared in court again this morning. Their lawyers got an indication that the state was ready to proceed. The earlier charge of 'aggravated burglary', a scheduled offence under the Terrorism Act, will not be pursued. Instead, the charges are those of 'affray', and two counts of 'criminal damage'. The case will be heard before a jury at the Crown Court in Derry, but not before the autumn. The next stage is a Preliminary Enquiry, at which the Prosecution present the charges to be pursued and outline the evidence. This will be on Thursday 5 June 2007, at Bishop Street Courthouse in Derry. The Derry Anti War Coalition is organising a mass rally outside the courthouse on that day, calling for the charges to be dropped and urge everyone to begin making plans to come to Derry for that day . ... read full story / add a comment
