When a local journalist and editor of a West Belfast Newspaper recently voiced his opinion concerning the neglect of duties and responsibilities by the Member of Parliament for West Belfast. Many in the community considered this a breakthrough in fair and honest reporting. However, this was short lived when the newspaper printed a front page public apology to the Member of Parliament and then obliterated all trace of the article from its internet webpage and any other associated worldwide newspapers websites.

Concern grows over the continued detention of three union activists arrested in connection with this year’s May Day events in Iran. Eleven other detained workers have now been released, some on very considerable bail.

Sheis Amani, Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi, all founders and leading members of the newly formed Free Union of Workers in Iran are still detained. Sheis Amani, a veteran shop-steward from Sanandaj, was arrested ahead of May Day. Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi, member and substitute member, respectively, of the FUWI’s governing board, were arrested on 1st May as they came to take part in the May Day rally called by the union in Asaluye in the south of Iran. ... read full story / add a comment

The following letter has been published in the Irish Times on 9th May 2008. This is a significant development, because the Gardai and the Irish Government authorities have clearly failed to carry out their duties towards prevention of the crimes of torture at Shannon airport. This however does not relieve the citizens of Ireland of their responsibilty to prevent torture. It is the moral and legal duty of all Irish citizens to take 'all neccessary means' to prevent the possible continuing use of Shannon airport by the CIA and the US military for the purpose of transporting prisoners for torture. ... read full story / add a comment

Garda says that lots of people find anti-war banners offensive, and is looking for the least excuse to have them removed. Whatever about his illegitemate and unprofessional power-hungry bullying, this garda must have turned off his critical faculties regarding the offensive nature of illegal invasions and one million Iraqi dead. It seems the Irish state police would rather banish factual posters in a temporary vigil, than investigate what's on CIA and US Army flights going through Shannon Airport. ... read full story / add a comment

Public hospitals around the country scheduled to close under current Government plans have been named in the run up to a major health rally in Monaghan on Saturday, May 10th. These closures will lead to an American-style health system where access to medical treatment, including hospital emergency care, depends on ability to pay, warned Marie O’Connor Health Services Action Group PRO. If Monaghan General closes, HSE will press on to terminate over 40 other public hospitals, said Monaghan Community Alliance Chairperson Peadar McMahon. ‘Many are already marked DNR –– do not resuscitate.’ Speakers at the Monaghan rally include Joe Higgins of the Campaign for a Real Public Health Service, former MEP Patricia McKenna, Dr Illona Duffy, Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson and local TD, Caoimhghín O'Caoláin and Peadar McMahon, Chairperson of the Monaghan Community Alliance. ... read full story / add a comment

Ireland’s charities will require additional financial and infrastructural support from Government to help them prepare for new regulatory requirements set out in the Charities Bill 2007, a conference was told on Thursday.

Delegates from a cross-section of charities put their position in relation to the bill, which is currently being passed through the Dáil, to the Minister of State in the Department of Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs, Pat Carey TD, at a national conference organised by The Wheel, a leading support and representative network for the community and voluntary sector in Ireland.
