More than a year after their homes were destroyed during the battle between the Lebanese army and the militant islamist group Fatah al-Islam, the majority of the refugees from Nahr al-Bared in North Lebanon find themselves in a difficult situation. Not able to return to their homes, stuck in pre-fabricated housing units and often unemployed, many of them feel frustrated and hopeless, only sometimes seeing a glimmer of hope. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

On Monday 10 November US a US Air force executive jet, reg no 40109, a learjet 35 or a C 21A in military terminology, was being refuelled at Shannon airport, while being protected by a special garda escort. We dont yet know who the passengers were, but such luxuary transports are not for one star privates, they are normally reserved for one star generals and upwards. Some of these generals have been guilty of war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is most likely that the Gardai did not search the aircraft to ascertain if any war criminals were on board. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Cork Lord Mayor Brian Berminghan (Blueshirt Party) has organised a fun evening in remembrance of Irishmen deluded into fighting for the British Empire. They got sense after being ordered to stop machine gun bullets and after the 1916 Rising. Cllr Birmingham has yet to get his. Hopefully this disgrace to the 'rebel' county will be answered, and soon. See: Fancy Dress in Cork - World War One - it's a killer - what a thriller - fun for all the family http://www.indymedia.ie/article/89339?comment_limit=0&c...38445 ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

The United States of America took a giant step in the last week in the field of civil rights and human development when a man with Offaly ancestry was chosen to lead the nation. While there is no legal bar against people from Offaly or their descendants holding high office in the U.S., many were surprised that voters were able to overcome the widespread prejudice against the county. Men from Offaly (known as BIFFO's) have often encountered a "glass ceiling" whereby they would be trusted with a glass, but not a pint. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Environment Minister John Gormley was interrupted during his speech to the Green Infrastructure conference this morning in Malahide. The environmental campaign group Plane Mad disrupted the conference to express their opposition to another runway at Dublin Airport. The group oppose the runway on the grounds that it will double the aircraft emissions at the airport. These emissions play a dangerous part in causing climate change. Two activists dressed as cartoon criminals mimed building a runway around the podium that Gormley was speaking from. Aircraft noise was simultaneously played from the back of the room. One of the "criminals" moved among the audience passing out information about the proposed new runway form his bag of "swag". The minister was also presented with a letter by the group which he accepted. ... read full story / add a comment
