The Triple Arm of Good Governance: the Judiciary, the Gardai and the offices of Parliament.

Included herein: A Question tabled for written reply to Minister Micheal Mc Dowell TD.

A response to the written reply by Peter Preston.

To be added at Mr Preston's request:

"Before each Dail session, the Ceann Comhairle says a prayer that goes something like this,

Through your divine inspiration may all our actions, works and words come from thee.....

(Mr Preston insists that his hunger strike is nothing to do with the criminal case, but
to be answered by the TD who he accuses of returning to him transcripts altered by a named TD

The British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Lord Triesman, in a speech given to the Royal Commonwealth Society on the 26th of June, has stated that in facing up to the challenges posed by the 21st century, the Commonwealth must learn the lessons of the past, and he added: “In a globalised world the Commonwealth cannot go it alone.” The Minister also said that: “The people and governments of the Commonwealth must help address the big issues facing the world. The Commonwealth does have a comparative advantage in many niche areas, including Diversity, Identity, and Multiculturalism. It must exploit these at all levels.” ... read full story / add a comment

The EPA website today invites you to give them your opinion on how well they do their job. This is newsworthy as it is a rare event for a State agency to put itself into the spotlight in this way. However the call for opinions needs a little more publicity than simply appearing on the EPA website. Indymedia's newswire allows readers to learn about stuff like this from a central point - that is what makes Indymedia so valuable. ... read full story / add a comment

Twenty-four Greenpeace activists from Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey and the UK were arrested earlier this month at NATO’s Brussels Headquarters. A Greenpeace truck carrying a 3.6 meter (12 feet) full-size replica of a US B61 nuclear bomb blocked the entrance to NATO with activists bearing banners saying “Nukes out of NATO.” Their demand: remove the 480 US-owned and controlled nuclear weapons from Europe! ... read full story / add a comment

8 Sudanese men who came off a hungerstrike on the 9th June, after 19 days without food, face deportation from Sweden to their home country despite their protests. After almost three weeks camped out in the centre of Gothenburg their public hungerstrike culminated at the city migration board offices (Migrationsverket) with the presentation of a petition of 7,000 signatures supporting their plea for asylum. The 8 are now continuing their campaign while awaiting the verdict on their individual cases which is due later in the summer.

“I am freezing, I have a pain in my stomach and feel sick. We will all visit a doctor tomorrow morning” said Dafalla Ohmar one of the hunger strikers said afterwards. ... read full story / add a comment

There was a heavy Garda presence (approx 30 members of the force) as 500 people gathered to take part in a peace event organised by the Galway Alliance Against War to express their opposition to warplanes, helicopter gun-ships and four British pilots, who have fought in the illegal war in Iraq, participating in the Salthill Air Show. On the 7th of June, Peter Preston having met no satisfactory explanation for a serious assault on his daughter which caused grevious bodily harm resulting in 25 stitches to her face - undertook to refuse food in protest.
One week later he took up position on Kildare street, the front entrance of the Dail (the Irish parliament). His fast has been sustained since then, & yet no-one really seems to have noticed other than the independent TD Finian Mc Grath.

Maybe a person of middle age with a scarred 19 year old daughter protesting on the street is not so newsworthy.
Maybe the menu at the Unicorn restaurant is more interesting.
Maybe his handwritten statement was difficult to read at first.
Maybe he's asking awkward questions in a manageable way. ... read full story / add a comment
