Sometimes politicians have to lose to win so the other side can show its true colours. Trump is the standout example, says Prof James Allan. Had he won in 2020, we would not have had the blitz of the last four weeks.

By John Brown Last Friday afternoon, as I watched the horrid images of the first "shock and awe" U.S. bombing blitz against Baghdad, which doubtless brought terror to millions of innocent civilians, my feelings of outrage at the Bush administration were joined by a sense of relief that was perhaps inappropriate at such a shameful moment in our history. I was relieved that, eleven days before, I had submitted my resignation from the U.S. foreign service. Numerous circumstances led to my resignation, but there were two main reasons. First, I believed that U.S. President George W. Bush had failed to present a convincing case to Americans and the world that massive force should be used against Iraq at this time. Second, I felt an obligation as an American to speak out against this presidential failure to justify a questionable policy. http://www.themoscowtimes.com/stories/2003/03/24/006.html ... read full story / add a comment

The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Naji Sabri, is in Cairo to appeal for Arab support in resisting the American-led invasion. He is taking part in a meeting of Arab foreign ministers in the Egyptian capital during which they will try to hammer out a foreign position on Iraq. The ministers may have trouble reaching a common position because the Arab world is split down the middle. Although most Arab people are angry about the American-led attack, some Arab governments are opposed, openly or in private, to Saddam Hussein. They are unlikely to support a common statement from the Arab League that condemns the Americans. ... read full story / add a comment

Seemingly, at least, everything is very simple and nice. First, Israel displayed perfect loyalty to the U.S., which presumably will pay it back in economic and political coin. Second, Israel haters, led by France, have lined up with America's rivals, and Washington, presumably, will pay them back. The cold wind blowing from Iraq toward the four-sided forum will yank the road map out of the Quartet's hands and momentously return it to Washington. Third, President Bush has sent the UN into rehab, which is something that the disciples of Israel's "UN is irrelevant" camp always like to gloat over. Jerusalem should not derive satisfaction from the American decision to ignore the UN. Under the cover of the automatic American veto, Israel has held onto territory it does not own for the last 36 years. Either way, if the battle cheer of the Israeli right isn't exaggerated, it is certainly premature. ... read full story / add a comment
