Papers stress Iraq's 'brave' resistance

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday March 24, 2003 16:56author by auntie beeb Report this post to the editors

The Arabic press on Monday focused on the resistance being mounted by Iraqi troops against US-led forces invading the country. They also turn their attention to the plight of civilians and prisoners-of-war.

The USA lost the diplomatic war and hoped to compensate for this with military war... But it did not receive a red-carpet welcome in Iraq.

Al-Jamahiriyah - Libya

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those who allege that they are concerned about the "freedom" of Iraq and about spreading democracy in the world ought to liberate themselves, before expressing this fake concern, which in fact reflects arrogance of power.

Al-Thawra - Syria

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The obvious thing is that the thousands of missiles and bombs, which they are dropping on Iraqi towns and on historic and cultural sites, will strengthen the coherence of the Iraqi people, the unity of their land and their brave stand.

Tishrin - Syria

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The strong resistance which has been shown by the Iraqi people in the past few days since the aggressive war began is a clear indication of the collapse of Washington's claims that its aggression will be fun and its targets against Iraq will be easy.

Al-Ba'th - Syria

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Iraqis' steadfastness and resistance is noble and gallant.

Al-Wafd - Egypt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The issue of destroying weapons of mass destruction should not be requested by one country to the exclusion of other countries. It should be a collective task.

Al-Ahram - Egypt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The USA in its aggression against Iraq has proved that it is the first country which sponsors terrorism to realize its hegemony over the world.

Al-Akhbar - Egypt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is clear that the USA needs someone who will advise it, so that it behaves like a modern superpower and not like its Israeli ally.

Al-Watan - Saudi Arabia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The talk about smart bombs while blood is flowing as a result of these so called smart bombs is considered to be extreme provocation of the ill-fated Iraqi families and the entire world.

Al-Jazirah - Saudi Arabia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The occupation of Iraq will be the beginning of the worst disaster for the entire region.

Ukaz - Saudi Arabia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The USA is not interested in Iraqi oil but at the same time it does not want Iraqi oil to be used to manufacture weapons of mass destruction.

Al-Watan - Kuwait

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No doubt we are witnessing an important phase in our history. The fraternal Iraqi people are the ones who will benefit most from this war and who will call to account all those who stood against their liberation from the Iraqi regime.

Al-Qabas - Kuwait

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The USA should be the last to speak about respecting international laws and conventions.

Al-Watan - Qatar

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We call on the international community and the UN in particular and its humanitarian organs to urgently intervene and protect civilians and PoWs.

Al-Ittihad - UAE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is our national right to call upon those dropping bombs and firing bullets to stop the war against the people of Iraq.

Al-Bayan - UAE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Iraq is not Saddam or those loyal people around him. Iraq is date-trees and historic rivers... The history and geography of Iraq will not be diminished by the ongoing dropping of missiles and bombs.

Al-Hayat al-Jadidah - Palestinian

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, the Arab system is facing three major crises, which are ambushing Iraq, Palestine and the Arab and Islamic culture as a whole.

Al-Hayat - pan-Arab, Saudi-owned

KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 (IslamOnline.net) - The stiff resistance offered by the Iraqi forces in Umm Qasr, Najaf and other cities has created a stir in Indonesia, Malaysia and Mindanao where the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq is now a daily debate among Muslims.

In Kuala Lumpur, there is not a single person not asking their friends for the latest information on the situation in Iraq, many seeking to know the chances of stiffer Iraqi resistance against what is here called the “invading crusaders”.

“Iraq is the berth of modern Islamic civilization, I have no doubt the Iraqis will not give up on their country just like that,” said a lecturer at a local University who wanted to be known as Abu Hamidah.

“It was not surprising to watch on BBB television that the Umm Qasr port was not effectively under the control of the invaders as fierce fighting went on there,” he added.

For the Malaysians, this war is a crime by the invasion forces and the “awe” is the fact that no other countries on earth believe they could do anything to stop the American advance in Iraq.

“What I understand is that now the tongue of George Bush, American President is twisting and turning and telling us a different story. At the beginning he said it will be a swift victory, now he vows a long enduring war,” said a grinning restaurant owner in Ampang, a large city in Selangor.

“If I could, I would go to the White House not to Baghdad,” said mother of four who owns a shop in Kuala Lumpur. “There is only one-way to quell the anger inside me: it is by standing in front of this Bush and slap him with both hands,” said Razifa.

Anti-US sentiments has definitely grown in this region to the extent that housewives are stuck to their television sets, praying that the Iraqi troops offers a lesson to the Americans and British forces.

The invasion forces confronted unexpected bloody resistance from the Iraqi army and people

MOSCOW, March 24 (islamOnline.net & News Agencies) - U.S. and British alliance, pushing north from the Kuwait border towards Baghdad, confronted bloody resistance from the Iraqi army Monday, March 24.

The U.S.-led coalition to invade and occupy Iraq suffered their heaviest losses yet, despite fooling itself into thinking it would win the war quickly and easily, the Russian press warned Monday.

"In the fourth day of the Iraqi operation, it is clear that the allies have not succeeded in waging 'a small victorious war,'" the daily Gazeta wrote.

Russia is fiercely opposed to the U.S.-led war in Iraq and led failed efforts in the UN Security Council to resolve the issue of the country's alleged weapons of mass destruction through diplomacy and increased inspections.

"Despite the hopes of the U.S. administration, the regime of Saddam Hussein did not fall to ruins after the first strike," said respected business daily Vedomosti.

"In the face of massive American and British attacks, the Iraqis did not give up by the thousands, weapons of mass destruction were not found, Hussein was not killed and the victims are growing not only among soldiers but among civilians as well," it wrote.

"The hope of a rapid capitulation in Iraq has not been realized," it said, adding that "for now, there are no signs that the Iraqi army is crumbling."

"The allies have felt the bitterness of loss in Iraq," the daily Vremya Novostei wrote.

"The first combats showed that they risk avoiding a quick war -- the Iraqi army is not vanquished, the anti-air defense is not destroyed, the direction of the country is not demoralized," it said.

For the U.S. administration "to ignore the blood and corpses of its citizens will not be as easy as it was to turn its back on the UN Security Council," Vremya Novostei said.

The courage of the Iraqi people in defending their country against the aggressive war launched by Bush and Blair has increased my respect for them. I don't have any respect for the regime of Saddam Hussein, but who the President of Iraq is, is or rather should be a decision for the people of Iraq alone.
