Kicking off a visual demonstration outside Harold’s cross stadium and working our way with the help of local activists in Northern Ireland down through Cork city, campaigners and supporters of Animal Rights Action Network held peaceful protests and tabling events to highlight the cruel greyhound racing industry in Ireland. During a week of action from August 24 to 30 we worked hard to get the facts out to the general public about the cruelty and exploitation of greyhounds in the racing industry. Over the week and during the month of September ARAN will be working hard to raise awareness of the Irish campaign to abolish cruel greyhound racing and to educate people about the horrors of what gentle greyhounds endure before, during and after their racing lives. ... read full story / add a comment

An allegation that the offices of the Sporting Press in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, which describes itself as the “official organ of the Irish Coursing Club (ICC), has been raided within the past few days by the Garda Fraud Squad has been leaked by Coursing supporters. This allegation is contained on an Internet chat forum called the “Greyhound Knowledge Forum”. In the course of an exchange of views and comments by forum members, mainly in relation to Minister John Gormley’s upcoming decision on whether to grant a hare-netting license to the ICC, a person calling himself “Vinny Grennan” refers specifically to the presence of the Fraud Squad in the Sporting Press offices in Clonmel. ... read full story / add a comment

Yesterday in Belmullet District court, Maura Harrington was jailed for the fourth time this year over her opposition to Shell's plans in Mayo. Judge Mary Devins sentenced Ms Harrington to 3 months in jail for assaulting an employee of IRMS, and 3 months for trespassing in a farmyard close to the landfall site in Glengad on June 19 2008. Ms Harrington was also fined a total of €1000. This incident occurred shortly after Shell began drafting in security into the area and they had begun filming people in the locality (it hadn't been discovered these were working for IRMS at that stage). Yesterday, marked one year to the day that Maura Harrington began her hungerstrike which lasted 11 days until the Solitaire left Irish waters. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish Times reports the death of former owner, Major McDowell, September 10, 2009: Major Thomas Bleakley McDowell Former Irish Times chairman dies, aged 86 Widely known as “The Major”, he kept clear of involvement in editorial content, insisting that that was the domain of the editor. http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2009/0910/1....html The Irish Times changed during the Major era, from a newspaper reflecting the protected but significant interests of a distinct Protestant business class to one that reflected the moderninsing interests of Irish capitalism. It was not as smooth a transition as the Irish Times usually reports. In 1969 Major McDowell was 'hot under the coller" about the Irish Times. So wrote Andrew Gilchrist, the British Ambassador in Dublin to Whitehall. He went on: ... read full story / add a comment

SHell was found in contempt of a District Court order last week. The company was found by the judge to have entered common land in Rossport despite having been prohibited from doing so by a 2007 court order. Presumably the judge, when she returns to sentence the company next week, will treat them as harshly as she has treated opponents of the project to install the experimental gas pipeline in North West Mayo. ... read full story / add a comment

Until this week most young people doing juggling two worthwhile tasks like convincing their elders to vote No to Lisbon (either for the second time or the all important first) or researching a hefty Junior Cert project on international strategic relations and peace studies - would have had to rely on figures on the official arms trade dating from 2007. Since then we've seen a celtic tiger die and a mismanagement of the US economy under its war presidency of Bush infect the world with an economic crises. Unsurprisingly therefore arms trading of the official kind is down. But in good news for pro-Americans and pro-Lisbon Europeans, the share of the US in arms trading has jumped and second place globally is now taken for the first time not by Russia but our own catholic soulmates of the Italian Republic. ... read full story / add a comment

A very successful peace conference was held at Shannon airport on Sat 5 Sept 09 for the purpose of highlighting the interconnections between the establishment of a US forward airbase at Shannon airport, the militarisation of Europe, the abuse of Irish neutrality and the Lisbon Treaty. The attendance of over 80 was mainly for Dublin, so it was great to get such a dedicated group of peace activists to Shannon to show them very clearly to extent to which Irish neutrality has been abandoned at Shannon airport and the extent to which Ireland is complicit in the crimes against humanity being committed in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. ... read full story / add a comment

According to the Swedish "Dagens Nyheter" newspaper's updates in the last two hours, the US military entered a hospital run by the Swedish Committe for Afghanistan this week in pursuit of a patient who according to them held valuable intelligence on the Taliban. This would constitute a breach of the Geneva Conventions. This newsbreak follows coverage of the strongest statements critical of the NATO strategy so far by the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt at the meeting of EU foreign ministers held yesterday. Anyone who prizes Irish neutrality or perhaps those who sneer at such a thing, ought know that Sweden is a neutral state. It is unique amongst the neutral states of Europe in that it boasts a highly developed arms industry which indeed is also one of the oldest happily supplying military hardward to all and sundry since before Napoleon. The Swedish share the northern "Provincial Reconstruction Team" with the Finnish under German command. ... read full story / add a comment
