The news that the former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is to sign copies of his newly published memoirs at Eason’s in O’Connell St Dublin on September 4th has prompted the Galway Alliance Against War to call for him to be arrested for war crimes – specifically “for his unprovoked war of aggression against the defenceless people of Iraq”. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish Republican Prisoners Support Group welcomes the resolution of the conflict in Maghaberry. The prison-ers demands had been con-ceded and that there will be a phasing out of controlled move-ment and random strip search-ing has been abolished.

The IRPS held a 20-strong picket of the Ministry of Justice, Petty France, London on 7 August 2010. The picket involved com-rades from Socialist Fight, the Revolutionary Communist Group (Fight Racism, Fight Imperial-ism!), Workers Power, the Irish Political Status Committee and the Free Mumia Abu-Jamal campaign. ... read full story / add a comment

Yesterday people from the local community of Pullathomas and Rossport and Solidarity campers lead by the rousing sound of a visiting bagpiper and drummer, returned to one of Shell's drilling rigs, gaining access at low tide across the exposed sand bars of Sruwaddacon bay. On arriving at the rig a number of people surrounded the drill casing and danced around it before forming a tight huddle to prevent any further work occurring. Meanwhile others held a large banner and occupied the area while children played in the sand. ... read full story / add a comment

Earlier tonight, (Thursday) GARC Activists delivered a new Newssheet throughout the Greater Ardoyne area. As the title states above, it was to set the record straight about our 12th July protests. The following text was contained in our Newssheet......

'Three days before the Twelfth, GARC members and residents met PSNI Chief Super, Nigel Grimshaw in the presence of Fr. Gary Donegan at Holy Cross. During the meeting, we articulated our position, the results of our survey, and other literature which we previously distributed within the area. We also pointed out that it included no inflammatory content i.e.: incitement etc. We also notified him that there would be a protest but our plan of action had yet to be decided. Contrary to what Sinn Fein and others say, at no time did the residents collective never state it wouldn’t talk to the PSNI. As we’re on public record saying that we would talk to anyone, except the Parades Commission.

Support the call for a full prosecution of those who destroy our heritage. About 35,000 ring fort sites are currently identifiable in the Irish landscape – they are clearly marked on Ordnance Survey 6“ maps.

Of these, only about 250 ring forts have so far been subjected to archaeological excavation. How many we retain protected and preserved is up to us. Write letters to Gormley in support of the call from the Friends of the Irish Environment to bear the full weight of the law down upon the people responsible for this destruction.

Yesterday at about 2.30pm Shell began to lower "Jack - 1" - one of two survey barges currently in Sruth Fhada Chonn estuary SAC (Special Area of Protection) - in order to tug it to another part of the estuary.

The Rossport Solidarity Camp was ready and willing to claim free passage of the public estuary and in the process upset the operation. Over a dozen Shell security boats and two Garda RIBS couldn't keep the 6 kaykers out, with two of them reaching the moving barge after an hour and a half of chase.

The environmental group Friends of the Irish Environment have written to the Minister for the Environment calling for prosecutions to follow the recent complete levelling of two listed ringforts by a farmer in County Cork. The ringforts were located in the townland of Knockacareagh, near Killmurray in north Cork. The farm was auctioned on 24 June, 2010. The new owner obliterated the ring forts, which were marked on maps and included in a photograph on the auctioneer's website, within a week of taking possession. ... read full story / add a comment

There has been much in the news media of late regarding political prisoners in Cuba. You hear little of Cuban political prisoners in US Jails. Take the case of Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Miami Five imprisoned in the US for fighting terrorism. Gerardo is suffering under another punishment from the US government. Since July 21, Gerardo has been held in the ‘hole’ - a windowless cell of 7x3 feet which he shares with another prisoner, with little ventilation and reaching temperatures of 95 degrees. He is unable to take a shower and is taken outside in a cage for just one hour every other day. ... read full story / add a comment
