The convoy was stranded for several days on the Jordan/Egypt border, and is now trying to enter Gaza by a different route. The Ireland-Palestine Campaign (IPSC) has learned that the 'Viva Palestina' convoy bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza is back on the road. The convoy - which includes a number of vehicles and 10 people from Ireland - had been stranded on the Jordan/Egypt border because of the refusal of the Egyptian government to allow it to enter the country to complete the final leg of its 4,000 mile journey to Gaza. On Sunday 27th December the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign erected a memorial tree in Limerick city centre to mark the first anniversary of Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza last winter, The names of the 1415 people who were killed during the 22 day assault were printed on colour-coded cards for the public to attach to the tree - blue for men, pink for women and white cards for the over 300 children killed. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) has just heard that Zoe Lawlor from Limerick and Hilary Minch from Dublin, both IPSC members, were among 23 Gaza solidarity activists taken off a bus to al Areish today by Egyptian police. Those detained are currently being brought back to Cairo under police escort. The police are holding their passports. The 23 activists include two Irish, 15 Germans, two Palestinians, two Turks and three Americans. All were intending to participate in the 'Gaza Freedom March' on 31 December. Hedy Epstein, the 85 year old Holocaust survivor and peace activist, announced that she will begin a hunger strike today as a response to the Egyptian government’s refusal to allow the Gaza Freedom March participants into Gaza. Ms. Epstein was part of a delegation with participants from 43 countries that were to join Palestinians in a non-violent march from Northern Gaza towards the Erez border with Israel calling for the end of the illegal siege.
