The World Trade Organisation's General Agreement On Trades and Services, where government is forced to create an 'equal playing field' through the removal of 'barriers to trade' in the services industries has long been the subject of the anti-capitalist lefts' rhetoric and polemic. Barriers cited by the WTO include "the existence of government monopolies and high subsidisation of local institutions”. It is in this context of attacks on public services that the Irish Government has raised the student registration fees by 70% from 396 euros to 670 euros. ... read full story / add a comment

Protestors are in the classic role of "protestors", people with no real power over their lives so they must demand it from the ruling class. Demonstrations also point to a lack of creativity; the only thing we can come up with is playing the song and dance of our rulers. How much longer will these protests go on for? The Judicial Reviews taken by the environmental network Friends of the Irish Environment were yesterday withdrawn from the High Court. The actions were taken in April of this year against the decision of the Planning Appeals Board to grant permission for the proposed new peat powered stations at Shannonbridge and Lanesborough and against the licence issued by the Environmental Protection Agency for the project. The group stated its withdrawal was as a direct result of “the Government’s interference in the judicial process.” Mr Brian Cowen, Minister for Foreign Affairs announced on 8 May that measures to allow the ESB proceed with the building of new Power Stations at Shannonbridge and Lanesborough were formally approved by the Cabinet a decision which Green Party Leader called “contempt of Court”. ... read full story / add a comment

An contributor to the guestbook of the English Nazi group Combat 18 (link removed)has called on people to shoot Bertie Ahern (described as "bertie allsorts" in the message). The full message by the man, calling himself david, is as follows (link removed): Name: david Web address: www.nsrus.com Sent: 13:28 GMT on 17 July shoot bertie allsorts the nigger lover. The message was posted three days after the attempted assassination of French President Jacques Chirac. "david" links to an Irish rascist website (link removed) which strangely sees Arthur Griffith and Eoin O'Duffy in the same light as well as providing a photo of Jean Marie Le Pen. For reasons of freedom of speech, (link removed )shouldn't be shut down. However "david" is going too far in calling for the shooting of Bertie Ahern, whatever you make think of his Machiavellian politics. ... read full story / add a comment |
