What's the difference between scepticism and cynicism? Cynicism is especially necessary for assessing politics, says Prof James Alexander, as it sits below scepticism, making us question the motives of those who rule us.

Poster problems for election candidates Ryan and Maphoso

category dublin | politics / elections | news report author Wednesday June 03, 2009 20:26author by Sparkyauthor email sparky_dublin at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

Ahead of Friday's poll, two election candidates have been facing quite different problems getting their message out through campaign posters.

For Eoin Ryan, posters featuring an image of the candidate holding up a sign clearly proved too inviting for those harbouring anti-FF sentiment. As evident this morning on Gardiner Street, a fly-poster had subverted Ryan's message overnight with the slogans 'Fianna Fail don't care about you' and 'Fianna Fail created this mess'.

By contrast, immigrant candidate Patrick Maphoso (Independent, North Inner City) has faced an altogether more serious challenge, with dozens of his election posters disappearing altogether.

"It does look like there has been a systematic effort to remove them in some areas, notably the East Wall," says Maphoso. "I think all candidates should expect poster casualties along the way, but when you have just one black guy standing and his posters disappear in numbers while others stay largely untouched then I don't think we're talking bad luck."

"I was actually stopped by some boys on Parnell Street who said they knew people who were were taking down and BURNING my posters," he continues. "Whatever the truth, just keeping posters up has been a bigger challenge than I'd hoped in this election."

And Joe Higgins will live on the average industrial wage donating the rest to the labour movement and community campaigns.

South African-born Patrick (Paddy) Maphoso is standing as an Independent candidate for Dublin North Inner City in the June 2009 local elections.

Endorsed by members of both immigrant and indigenous communities, Patrick stands for social inclusion and puts a strong emphasis on anti-discrimination and anti-racism.

Steeped in the trade union tradition of South Africa and Ireland, Patrick has worked tirelessly for the rights of workers and equality. He has championed many cases to stop exploitation in the workplace.

Today, Patrick runs a small business in Moore Street and is at the heart of a community that was excluded from the benefits of the Celtic Tiger economy. He believes politicians colluded with bankers and developers to profit on the back of the electorate and is determined to be a voice for change.

Patrick's campaign priorities strongly reflect his concern to put the needs of ordinary people first in the running of the city.

What difference a resession makes to "Ireland of the welcomes"

RTE´S Primetime explored the current situation of racism on Dublins inner city streets, A crew went out with Patrick as he was campaigning as he was met with such niceties as "Im a rascist", "we dont want you, and theres 1000´s more like me"
http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0519/primetime.html

A response on the feedback section of Patricks website, sums up the feelings of many, myself included, as a foreigner trying to plug in and live happily in a foreign country, more easy for me as a white man, compared to my Latino friends here in Barcelona:

All the best

As an Irishman living in London, I was appalled to watch the recent RTE 'Prime Time' report documenting the racism you have experienced on the streets of Dublin. Despite its reputation for being a welcoming society, Ireland has always had a problem with racism, which is ironic given the numbers of Irish people who have settled in countries all around the world, always expecting to be welcomed. If I lived in Dublin, you would have my vote and I wish you the best of luck in the forthcoming elections. Do not let the ignorance of some get you down - the man who talked off camera of you "making him sick" on the Prime Time programme was a disgrace to all Irishmen - he would be considered a racist idiot in any country.
