Lights out at 8 for Earth Hour 08

category international | environment | event notice author Wednesday March 26, 2008 13:31author by Earth Hour Ireland - Earth Hour Irelandauthor email earthhourireland at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

official earth hour is March 29th at 8pm

Dublin is the first city in Ireland to embrace the spirit of the global campaign of Earth Hour 2008. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Paddy Bourke (Labour) has been instrumental in gaining the support of city council representatives to endorse the campaign. Speaking about the Earth Hour campaign he said “I am thrilled that as Dublin Lord Mayor, I will be leading our capital city in its I would urge businesses and homes to join in and take part in the campaign.”, this campaign is important and everyone from citizens up to Government has a duty to do what they can against global warming. It is up to us all to do what we can to reduce our CO2 emissions. Through one simple action, turning off our lights for an hour, we can deliver a powerful message about the need for action.”

On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.

In 2008, 24 global cities including Dublin will participate in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.

Thanks to the support from representatives of the Labour Party, we now have the support of other towns and cities. Other local authorities that have passed motions of support for this global campaign include Wexford Borough Council; Kilkenny City and Borough Council; Carrick On Suir Town Council; Clare County Council; Limerick City Council; Galway City Council; Wicklow County Council; Naas Town Council; Kildare County Council; Tipperary County Council (South); Nenagh Town Council; Carlow County Council

The Custom House lights were never really on were they?

This is a government initiative- and yet the greens support toll roads, huge incinerator projects
and profit-making anti environmentalism non-stop.

I shan't be attending this attempt at awareness raising that quite clearly is a tokenist nod
to Green attempt to create mass youth movement on global warming while betraying and
ignoring the young community brutalised and marginalised at Tara.

Getting one's priorities in the right order is a sure sign of maturity.

To reach out and raise global awareness to the plight of the planet. As the citizens of Sydney did last year and now to have brought the enthusiasm that has encouraged 24 other cities to do likewise is worth applause.

We the ordinary people must surely identify with the truth - that we are facing a man made global disaster, which will ultimately cost lives and lose lands around the world.

It is our duty to do all that we can to stave off the impending tragedy.

And

Another truth is that there is no point in saving the Tara/Skryne from the M3, for when the sea levels rise and the land floods, all will be lost !
