One must try to get beyond the limitations of a purely republican Northern Ireland perspective which is rather provincial. Such people seem blinded by dislike for Thatcher because of the events of 1981. Thus anything even remotely connected to the person of Thatcher is automatically rejected on emotional grounds in the first instance. This causes them to confuse the person with the objective evidence of what government measures may work well or not based on the record. In fact the record of market based solutions to problems, accompanied perhaps by some initial state subsidy, is fairly positive as is the experience of moving from high rates of marginal taxation on payrolls to more moderate levels as an measure to improve economic performance overall. The same is true of a firm approach to monetary policy combined with absence of exchange controls. Rather than reach for the handy loaded rejectionist label (neocon, Thatcherite) it would be more sensible to adopt a cerebral approach to economic policy.
