Perhaps those on the vigil would also remember also the many victims of Che.
There were no small number of them.

BTW Che was killed by the local security forces, not by the CIA.

Felix Ismael Rodriguez born 1941 Cuba, granted US citizenship 1969 [alias Máximo Gómez, codename Lazarus] was officer in charge of the unit who arrested Ernesto Che Guevara.

He admitted under oath in cross-examination during a 2004 trial of a fellow CIA SOA agent that he was guilty of the human rights violation which saw Che Guevara murdered & mutilated on the 9th of October 1969, the presiding judge decided on that basis to disallow his testimony in defence of that other agent.

He has since made quite a thing about it, here's a transcript of a 2005 interview :- http://www.canf.org/2005/1es/ensayos/2005-ago-19-el-gue...s.htm

Felix Rodriguez is still alive, received further military decorations in South Vietnam & dedicates himself to anti-communist propaganda, campaigned against John Kerry in 2004 and as of 2005 is chairman of the board of the "bay of pigs" museum as well as being president of the Bay of Pigs veterans.

You should look him up. ask him for some c-o-n-d-e-m-n-a-t-i-o-n.

Che was killed by the local Bolivian security forces whom he had decided to take on in violent rebellion. That does not make it right and it was counter productive - in jail he had much less value to his supporters than as a dead hero. His death was a relief to Castro – better a dead icon than someone who could challenge him as he settled into permanent Government with himself of top of the tree. He was not mutilated - an autopsy was performed on his body. He set himself up as a champion of the powerless but when he himself got into a position of power he was more ruthless than those he had helped overthrow. He is not entitled to a dispensation for “revolutionary justice” – he was a vindictive killer. His programme of permanent revolution was completely unworkable without mass killing and the creation of poverty on Maoist lines as far as I can see. What the Bolivians did to him, which was wrong, was exactly what he would have done to another had the positions been reversed. One has to see behind the façade of the icon.

In response to a question, Tony Saunois is no more Latin American than Homer Simpson - and possibly no brighter. He is from England. Years ago he was a big figure in the Labour Party Young Socialists when Militant controlled it (I think he was at one time its represenhtative on the Labour Party's National Executive Commitee), and has been a CWI hack all his adult life. His favourite style of oratory is to shout at the top of his voice and wave his hands in the air.

Those who went on to form Militant and then the Socialist Party were fiercely critical of Guevara when he was alive and they've repeatedly condemned Guevarism since. It seems, however, that once the t-shirts began to sell, and Guevara was a logo, the SP and other Trotskyites like SWP are really eager to associate themselves with Che Guevara, even though they completely disagree with his Stalinist politics and guerilla warfare tactics. They're bandwagoning the t-shirt corporations!

This is very misleading stuff. Why don't you lot make it clear that you profoundly disagree with Che's politics?

The reason the SP have Che commemorations rather than say Lavernty Beria commemorations is that Che was a rather handsome Latino who took a nice photo, whereas Beria was a vertically challenged toad-like chap who was about as photogenic as a water buffalo. That's why.

Ché Guevara has been the only true revolutinary who ever walked on this planet. He has been used by Fidel Castro, who has not done anything for the Cuban people but spread terror and fear which now will continue with Raul Castro. Dictators such as Castro, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Mao, the idiot from North Korea and many South American juntas have the only intention to exercise power over their people, always using their guns and the other half of the people that support them. On orders of these dictators their soldiers will shoot their own mother. When Che Guevara wanted to do good to the Cuban people, Castro banned him from the Cuban soil and subsequently betrayed him, knowing he would be killed eventually. After that he used Che's picture to promote his dictatorial regime. This was easy for him, for everybody loved Ché, not Fidel nor Raul.
