Dublin 10 May, 7.30pm Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square Dublin 1

International tensions being ratcheted shows strong likelihood of attack on Iran. We need a principled solidarity campaign with the people of Iran, rather than its regime.

Contact Anne McShane on [email protected] or on 086 2343238

The initiative to set up this important campaign was taken by Iranian political activists and organisations who oppose the Islamic regime in Iran and also stand against any imperialist sanctions or attack. It has links with students, womens' organisations and workers struggles in Iran who are fighting for their rights there and are also against US or UN intervention.

An organisation has been set up in Britain and meetings have taken place in the United States as well as in other European countries. See the website for more details of supporters and the founding statement, news from Iran, activities and recent statements - www.hopoi.org

Yassamine Mather, a leading Iranian political activist and writer will be the main speaker at the meetings in Cork, Dublin and Belfast to launch the Irish campaign. She will give details of the situation in Iran and the links that have been made with the movements there as well as an analysis of the current crisis.

Sign up to the campaign and come along to the meetings. Contact Anne McShane on [email protected] for more information.

Heres a report on successful Trade Union solidarity work carried out by HOPI in Scotland. The Scottish TU movement is with the ordinary people of Iran but are opposed to the Theocratic Iranian Government. Full artice at link.

The Hands Off the People of Iran campaign staged an effective intervention at this week’s Scottish Trades Union Congress in Glasgow. Marcila Gharib reports

On the conference floor HOPI member Terry Brotherstone of Aberdeen University and the UCU Scottish executive proposed a successful anti-war composite that sought to defend Iraqi academics killed or forced into exile. Terry argued strongly for HOPI’s principles - against imperialism, against the theocracy and in solidarity with Iran’s workers, including teachers and academics. An RMT amendment to the motion on the threat of war against Iran stressed the importance of supporting strikes, such as the one at the Vahed Bus company, and expressing our solidarity with workers’ leaders like Mansour Ossanlou.

Amongst the other speakers, John Leach of the RMT made some important points regarding the concerns of rank and file members of his union over the war. He said the anti-war motion the RMT had proposed to the conference was not just drawn up by the union officials - it reflects the views of the overwhelming majority of their members. The RMT president also reiterated the support of his union for workers in Iran involved in organising independent trade unions, mentioning in particular Mansour Ossanlou.

Yassamine Mather, an Iranian political activist, will speak. She will be joined at the Dublin meeting by Patrick Nulty, Chair of Labour Youth and by Des Derwin, Vice President, Dublin Council of Trade Unions (Personal Capacity).

Des Derwin explains why he is supporting the campaign:

“Iran has a trade union movement, now persecuted. Basic trade union rights are brutally denied by the regime in Iran. When Iran and the workers of Iran are persecuted and threatened with bombing and invasion by the US and the EU in the name of democracy, it is essential that those who oppose this also oppose the oppression of trade unionists in Iran."
