Basque Delegation to Ireland

Basque Delegation to Visit Dublin.

Approximately 35 Basque youth activists will be visiting Ireland at the start of next month. They'll be in Dublin from Friday (2/8) to Sunday (4/8), during which time we intend to hold a protest outside the Spanish embassy on Saturday afternoon and there will be a social in the top floor of Conways that night. All are welcome, regardless of party or political affiliation and it's an excellent opportunity to talk to people from Euskal Herria about the situation in their country, their campaigns for independence from the Spanish and French states, the horrific situation regarding Basque political prisoners, their struggle against the forces of globalisation and to retain their own language and culture.

We're also trying to arrange a talk on Saturday evening before the social and if any are interested in attending please contact me.

Which youth group? Haika? Who?

author by Justin - Basque Solidarity Irelandpublication date Mon Jul 22, 2002 09:36author email maigh_nuad at yahoo dot comauthor address author phone 086 3667694Report this post to the editors

Haika was banned and shut down by the Spanish government some time ago, much like Jarrai, another generation of Basque youth. Then, Segi was set up, from the Basque for 'Continue'. Segi was banned earlier this year and since then there has been no 'formal' restructuring of the organisation. The people coming include leading members of the Basque youth movement from Bilbo and Donostia as well as representatives from the north (French occupied) part of the country.

Thanks for the info. It's really hard to get recent information about what's going on with Baque youth-most of the articles are in Spanish (which I don't speak).
