Jeb Bush is coming to town

As you may know, Meteor the mobile phone company have sponsored a business lunch with Governor of Florida - Jeb Bush at the Conrad Hotel, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2 on 21st July 2006 at 12:30pm. http://www.amcham.ie/
Cosantoiri Siochana Dublin group is organising a series of pickets outside Meteor premises in the run up to the visit.
What we are proposing is for 2 or three people at a time to hand out leaflets to customers going in and out of the shop as well as passers by for about 1 ½ hours or so.

There has been a protest called for outside the Hotel on the 21st at 12noon so these pickets could serve to publicise that as well.

See the list of meteor shops below. There are 3 in Dublin city centre which we want to target; Grafton St, Henry St, and Nth Earl St.

We have designed leaflets and posters & some graphics, for use outside the stores.

If the lunch is starting at 12.30, then it might be a good idea to get there by 12.00.

BTW, here comes a comment to Meteor's sponsorship of the event:

No sponsorship for Bush visit!

Mobile phone company Meteor are the proud sponsors of the American Chamber of Commerce’s business lunch with Florida’s Governor Jeb Bush in Dublin on 21 July. While this may appeal to Meteor’s business customers, it’s a very risky move as regards its young personal customers, who are well clued-in to the ways of the world.

The visit of Jeb Bush cannot heal the damage done to the Bush brand by Jeb’s brother, George “Dubya” Bush, who is responsible for the catastrophic invasion of Iraq. Our generation will never forget the damage that Dubya’s aggressive actions have done to the United States and to the whole of humanity.

But Irish people have good reason to distrust Jeb Bush himself. Award-winning journalist Greg Palast has described how the State of Florida, headed by Governor Jeb Bush, paid a company called DBT four million dollars to strike 91,000 people off the electoral register in Florida on the pretence that they were criminals, so as to stop them from voting in the presidential elections of 2000. These were mostly Black people who would have voted for Al Gore instead of George Bush.

Jeb Bush did not put these people back on the register until after he was re-elected Governor of Florida in November 2002.

So the Bush brand represents the values of racism and electoral fraud.

Sponsor the Pitstop Ploughshares instead!

If Meteor wanted to capture the imaginations of young Irish people, it might be better to sponsor the Pitstop Ploughshares, who on 5 February, 2003, disabled a US Navy aeroplane at Shannon Airport so as to stop it taking part in the invasion of Iraq.

Now that’s Irish values for you!

The trial against the Pitstop Ploughshares in October 2005 collapsed when it was discovered that the judge was a friend of George Bush. The Ploughshares are due to be re-tried in the Four Courts, in Dublin, on 10-24 July - if they can find a fair judge!

Ask Meteor to cancel its sponsorship of Jeb Bush’s visit and to sponsor the Pitstop Ploughshares instead.

Please tell all your friends and relations that they can very easily convert to become a Vodafone or O2 customer, while retaining their existing phone number.

They'll even find that calls home while on holiday are cheaper.

I can't believe that a company providing services to the Irish people would invite a corrupt, self-serving pig as Jeb Bush to speak in Ireland. We should pull all support from them immediately.

The campaign should be less about showing up outside the hotel, and more about an ongoing campaign on the streets and over the web promoting the idea of converting from Meteor to any other supplier. This could be a very successful campaign, as Meteor's target market are teenagers and people in their early 20's.

This isn't to say that the other two are any good either, but at least they haven't brought a war-monger's corrupt brother to town.

If your downtown early join the Pit Stop Ploughshares Solidairty crew as the 5 go throught thier 2nd. last day of trial. there were only a dozen folks walking to court Thursday with them, as their international support has had tro head home.

Friday 9am Anti-War Vigil, The Spire
9.45am Peace Walk to Court.
10.30am Trial Continues in Court 23 with Judge Charging the Jury, the day should finishbefore 1 pm. As the Judge will split the charge and complete it on Monday to send the jury out.

If it finishes on time, the Ploughshares are considering a peace walk to the Jeb Bush demo.
If someone going to Noise Demo can swing by their vigila outside Four Courts from 10.30am) and pick up some leaflets for their Benefit Gig Sat night, I'm sure they would appreciate it.
