What's Bodenstown?" a young Sinn Féin activist recently asked me
says it all doesnt it?
.
At a recent Provisional Sinn Fein event in Dublin I got to talking to one young lad who was dressed in a military uniform to commemorate the War of Independence.
"Ah it was a desperate struggle" I says, "but they fought and sacrificed themselves because they truly believed",
adding to finish off "not like the current shower".
The young lad looked at me with fire in his eyes and replied "Oh no, the struggle goes on, we have to fight to get Stormont up and running".
If that's the campaign the provisional movement considers to be a struggle worth fighting and dying for,
then count me out.
REMEMBER, PROVISIONAL SIMPLY MEANS TEMPORARY.
Authentic Republican's held their commemoration already. You can read the oration at the following link.

I would be very interested to read this pamphlet that is being distributed on the day about Republicanism's unbroken tradition - is Republican Sinn Fein writing it for you? Because the current provisional leadership has broken every link possible with the past generations who came to Bodenstown, year after year, rededicating themselves to the 32 county Irish Republic, and confirming their pledge never to turn their backs on that Republic by entering and swearing allegiance to British created partitionist assemblies which usurp the functions of the Republic. I wonder what the title of the pamphlet will be? May I suggest the word "Continuity?"
No doubt the readings from Bobby Sands will not include the ones where he tells us that he is suffering, not for British equality of treatment or British civil rights, still less for Stormont and the GFA, but he was making the supreme sacrifice as a soldier of the unbroken, unbowed Republic.
Shouldn't this thread be entitled 'One of the numerous annual bodenstown commemorations' ?
AFAIK Sinn Fein, Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Labour, RSF, Workers Party, CPI all hold events there.
If you know of any others please add to the list
Poor oul Tone must be sick to the gills with all this disturbance. Allez le France!!

Tone's Grave
(Thomas Davis)
In Bodenstown churchyard there is a green grave,
And wildly around it the winter winds rave;
Small shelter I ween are the ruined walls there
When the storm sweeps down on the plains of Kildare.
Once I lay on that sod it lies over Wolfe Tone
And thought how he perished in prison alone,
His friends unavenged and his country unfreed
"Oh, bitter," I said, "is the patriots mead.
"For in him the heart of a woman combined
With heroic spirit and a governing mind
A martyr for Ireland, his grave has no stone
His name seldom named, and his virtues unknown."
I was woke from my dream by the voices and tread
Of a band who came into the home of the dead;
They carried no corpse, and they carried no stone,
And they stopped when they came to the grave of Wolfe Tone.
There were students and peasants, the wise and the brave,
And an old man who knew him from cradle to grave,
And children who thought me hard-hearted, for they
On that sanctified sod were forbidden to play.
But the old man, who saw I was mourning there, said:
"We come, sir, to weep where young Wolfe Tone is laid,
And we're going to raise him a monument, too
A plain one, yet fit for the loyal and true."
My heart overflowed, and I clasped his old hand,
And I blessed him, and blessed every one of his band:
"Sweet, sweet tis to find that such faith can remain
In the cause and the man so long vanquished and slain."
In Bodenstown churchyard there is a green grave,
And freely around it let winter winds rave
Far better they suit him the ruin and gloom
Till Ireland, a nation, can build him a tomb.
Was British withdrawal mentioned even once today? Was socialism? Was the All-Ireland Republic? How about the fact that there are still Republican prisoners in Ireland today?
Or just more or less the same thing we could hear at Fianna Fail's commemoration?
