Jump To Comment: 1I attended the forum lastnight at ucd and found it excellent and very informative.
Unfortunatly however the fact that the Health Minister couldn't / wouldn't attend was dissapointing as many valid issues wer'e risen by the audience inc. peoples own stories of depression/emotional health thus the fact that more needs to be done ie services provided for the young and older generation.
As a daughter of a Mother who's been disagnosed with by -polar i have become more aware of the issues and tend to notice how many people are really suffering, ' some feeling isolated and ignored even ashamed.
I believe education is they key ''maybe not resolving the issues but to make particularlly the young aware and help them feel at ease in knowing help is out there and shame should not be felt''. Make it part of the curriculum to discuss these matters, introducing people with experience of same.
There's a lot to do and the list is possibly non exhaustive when it comes to improving services, helping those in need and public awareness..
In my opinion i feel that Doctors/Psys in SOME cases advise and diagnose in the wrong when it comes to mental health in people.
For instance 'people experiencing menopause in their fifties or even late fourties' may feel they cannot cope and experience great despair.. Are they being told their suffering from depression and putting a name to it, giving medication to balance the brain cells.. Maybe i am far wrong but depression seems too commom in todays society, a high number relating to adults of those at menopausal age. In the young emotions/emotional wellbeing.. As raised by an individual in the audience it is emotional problems they experience and depression wrongy diagnosed in many cases. There's lack of undertanding or is it the lack of those extra qualifications needed to deal with people in these situations.
