Public Forum: Time to Act on Youth Mental Health

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday June 08, 2006 13:47author by sinead Report this post to the editors

Free Gathering with International Speakers

The National Centre for Youth Mental Health, in association with the School of Psychology University College Dublin Presents: Public Forum: Time to Act on Youth Mental Health

On Tuesday 20th June 2006 at 7.30 pm, Theatre L, Newman Building, University College Dublin??Why?
Mental health issues are the number one health concern of adolescents and young adults. The earlier help is given, the better the outcome. There are proven models that produce excellent outcomes for this age group. Yet, young people in Ireland with mental health problems rarely get timely, appropriate and effective help. It is time to act.

What?

The Forum will outline the compelling evidence that it is possible to provide young people with excellent mental health care and will present an opportunity for members of the general public to share their perspectives and experiences. Centrally, the forum aims to identify key actions that can be taken in the near term to ensure more young people in Ireland who need help with their mental health can access it.
?Who?

The Keynote speaker is Prof. Pat McGorry, perhaps the world’s most respected and influential pioneer of youth mental health services. Originally from Ireland, Prof. McGorry is Executive Director of ORYGEN Youth Health in Melbourne, an innovative mental health service that is noted for its multi-disciplinary approach, commitment to early intervention and deep involvement of young people and their families in service delivery. In particular, Prof. McGorry has developed the world's leading model for the treatment of young people with their first episode of psychosis.

How the international perspective on youth mental health relates to the experience of young people will be explored by:

Tim O’Malley TD, Minister of State with responsibility for Mental Health??Dr. Tony Bates, Executive Director, National Centre for Youth Mental Health??Dan Hayden, Incoming President, UCD Student's Union. Sinead Corcoran, Student, UCD

However, the most important contributions will come from the members of the general public who attend the event. For this reason all are welcome and admission is free. No bookings are necessary. ??For more information phone 01-7168410
