The obvious position to take on Iran is to oppose all and any Imperialist intervention, that must be the starting point. But then you must look at the political complexion of the Iranian Regime. You will quickly see that it is a rightwing Theocracy.

It oppresses women generally and executes women and gays for having sex outside of marriage. The Iranian Regime also oppresses its Kurdish and Arab national minorities. The Kurds are carrying on a campaign of armed resistance as are other socialist groups. These progressive forces should be supported in their campaign to overthrow the Islamic dictatorship.

It will be interesting to see if the SWP make any criticism of the Iranian Regime and if they offer any support to the progressive forces who are fightting to oust the Iranian Theocracy.

There's no such thing. Not a single SWP activist or supporter lives or works in Finglas. Even with the smallest things they are dishonest. Im from Finglas and I know most of the lefties in the area: theres lots of SFers, a branch of the ISN, a few members each of the SP and WP, a handful of Labour members and one Green but definitely no SWP.

Iran, now thats a hot topic in Finglas at the moment.

The SWP have a record 2 miles long for manipulating hijacking , and "passing off " as other groups.

I notice however in this this case the SWP have decided not to do this but hold the meet in their own name and not use their IAWM frontname / brand

This is commendable and they have a perfect right to do this anywhere they choose.

The fact that the SWP may have no members in Finglas is irrelevent.

You may live in Finglas but you can't possibly say that there are no SWP members in Finglas, do you know every single person who lives there? And even if the SWP don't have any members in Finglas they have as much right as anybody to organise a meeting there, and your comment about Iran and Finglas is patronising and implies that Finglas residents aren't interested or capable of understanding a issue like Iran. Your probably one of these lefty types who thinks the working class should only talk about bread and butter issues.

Isn't that the same as the Ballymun SWP? Membership 1. How's the Ballymun People Before Profit getting on Kevin?

author by Finglas Flyerpublication date Wed Apr 26, 2006 18:46author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Really, people should read my comment before accusing me of censorship, parochialism etc. I said nothing about the SWP's right to hold a meeting. What I did point out is that there is no such thing as the FinglasSWP which is the term used in the original post. Such a term implies that there is an SWP group/branch in the area. There is one in Ballymun but there isnt in Finglas. The SWP have no members and are not active in Finglas. Thats just a statement of fact. If 'sp member' does not believe me then just ask one of your comrades who live in Finglas and I am sure they will confirm this.

Of course they have a right to organise any meeting they like, anywhere they like, on any topic thay like, and if someone tried to stop them, much as I dislike their politics, I'd be the first to defend that right. But equally I have every right to point out a dishonest element in their advertisement!

As for the topic of the meeting, lets wait and see what response they get.

I live in Finglas but I wouldn't pretend to know the political views of all living there. I don't see any reason why the SWP shouldn't advertise the meeting as Finglas SWP. If they have any members, they will be at the meeting, if not I suppose the meeting will be an opportunity for them to meet some locals interested in the SWP. The topic is interesting an I wouldn't mind listening to the SWP take on the current situation although I wouldn't be afraid to criticise their viewpoint if I disagreed.

If I haven't any political work on that night I will make a point of going along. Hopefully there will be a decent turnout. We could all do with organising meetings in areas on various issues so people get the chance to hear alternatives to the s**t in the mainstream media.

Yes I posted the original meeting notice, I used "Finglas SWP" purely as didn’t want to post my name.

Yes I'm new in Finglas, just moved into a new house and will be here to stay so I’m sure I'll be meeting all the activists over time in the area for common work and on similar issues.

Not pretending at all that we have any thing like a branch in the area so people shouldn’t get too excited if I mistakenly give the impression otherwise :(
