"You?ll never be wasting our time," reads the Prevent poster. So why did the anti-extremism programme fail to stop the Southport killer, who had been referred to it three times? He's not the only one, says Charlotte Gill.

Union steps up support for sacked shop steward

The trade union, Mandate, is to step up its support for sacked shop steward, Joanne Delaney. Joanne, a 22 year old from Crumlin was sacked by Dunnes Stores management at the Ashleaf Centre in Crumlin for wearing a union badge. Mandate are at present pursuing an unfair dismissals case.

At its recent Executive meeting.Mandate agreed that a budget would be set aside to support solidarity action to back Joanne’s demand for reinstatement. it was also agreed to pursue the idea the idea of a National Wear Your Union Badge Day throughout Dunnes Stores outlets.

The Joanne Delaney Support Group said it warmly welcomed the the move by Joanne’s union, and would be continuing with protests on Dunnes at the Ashleaf centre every weekend. Protests are held on Friday evenings from 5.00pm and on Saturdays from 12 noon.

Joanne Delaney said she “was delighted with the decision of Mandate. I have been very buoyed up by the level of support from shoppers at the Ashleaf Centre, and the protests that have been taking place at Dunnes shops throughout the country and in Northern ireland.”

A National Wear Your Union Badge Day throughout Dunnes Stores outlets is an excellent idea. Would be good to see this extend to all unions in Ireland, for everyone to wear their Union badge on a particular day. Maybe to conicide with Mayday, although a seperate day would be good too.

So long as the pressure is continually applied, the Dunnes management will have to back down at some stage. This is crazy adverse publicity for them at a time when they have lost, and are losing ground to Tecso on a steady basis.

In the traditional Irish way "put 'em under pressure". Keep it up!!!!
