Bertie Ahern will be visiting UCD on the 2nd February Ahern is coming out to UCD this Thursday at 10:30am to open a new wing of the science building. The Taoiseach being invited out here is an insult to the thousands of students affected by the government's cutbacks on education funding, the BTEA allowance and their refusal to go ahead with the planned centralisation of the grants system. UCD students protested last week at Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown Council Offices due to the inefficient payment of grants and this is an opportunity to continue the campaign. We would appeal to activists to come out and support us and to use the occasion to tackle Ahern on the many issues this government has fallen short on. |

Jump To Comment: 1The recently revived UCD Anti-War Group are calling for a protest tomorrow against An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern’s visit to UCD, demanding an end to the imperialist occupation of Iraq and the Irish governments active support for it.
Over the last three years, at home and around the world, millions have demonstrated time and again against the war and in solidarity with the Iraqi people around slogans such as "no war for oil" and "troops out now".
In Ireland, Shannon airport has been used for refuelling by US warplanes. Over 500,000 US troops have used the airport on their way to and from Iraq. Another real indication of the Irish government’s complicity in the war is the fact it spends €10,000 every day subsidising the US government to use the airport, whilst our education system remains grossly under funded and while hundreds languish in pain on trolleys in our A&E departments.
The UCD Anti-War Group therefore demands the immediate withdrawal of imperialist forces from Iraq and that US warplanes stop refuelling in Shannon. We express our solidarity with all democratic, secular and progressive opposition forces in Iraq fighting for US-UK defeat.
We appeal to all opponents of this terrible occupation to join the protest if they can. We are assembling tomorrow at 10 am outside the Student Centre.
