MEMORIAL VIGIL GPO 8.30am-9.30am "War is Terror is War" Remembering London, Iraq, Afghanistan, NYC,

category dublin | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Wednesday July 13, 2005 13:15author by Pit Stop Ploughsharesauthor phone 087 918 4552 Report this post to the editors

"War is the terrorism of the rich; Terrorism is the war of the poor!"

Last Thursday the war came home to London.

The indiscriminate killing in London last Thursday imitates the hi tech slaughters by British & U.S. forces in the invasions of Iraq & Afghanistan. The Ahern Govt. continues to make Ireland deeply complicit in these illegal wars and a predictable target as Shannon Airport continues to host 30,000 U.S. military a month.

As Peter Ustinov reflected," War is the terrorism of the rich; Terrorism is the war of the poor!"

A week on from the London attacks, we take pause from this cycle of violence to remember the dead.
Gather at GPO 8.30am-9.30am.
Wear black if possible.
Names of the dead from London & Iraq will be read.
We will demand the withdrawl of Irish complicity and Shannon Airport from the war effort.

That's weird ???????.

We're not the most punctual, but we're usually the most reliable on keeping anti-war stuff happening in Ireland. I'll be coming off a dusk to dawn night shift, so will definitely be there. Damien & Elaine are definites. We've emailed out and text around. We sustain a weekly anti-war vigil at the GPO Mondays 4pm-6pm.

Not much more we can do in such a colonised town with such a housebroken generation. See you there 8.30am!

The Dublin Catholic Worker have been reading the names of the dead at thier vigils for quite sometime now - Iraqi dead, American dead, British dead, other 'coalition' dead, civilians and combatants alike and so on.

They make no differentiation. This war is a tragedy for all involved.

Bush is a war criminal and this is a criminal war.

Why don't you hold a vigil for the London victims only?
When on another night hold one for US Soldiers, and then on another the Iraqi "victims"? And finally one protesting Shannon "war port".

See how many turn up to each...

The British state have been preparing for this recent attack for quite some time. Security elites have always said "it is a case of when not if". The London Mayor who was against the invasion and occupation of Iraq stated at the time "London will pay for this decision".

Last week's attack was a price Blair & Co. were prepared to pay to follow Bush into an "illegal" (Kofi) "immoral" (JP2) and "unwinnable" (many a U.S. military expert) war.

The post attack sequence was managed with well rehearsed agendas. From the initial lies of "power surge" affecting the tube to attempts to control images were to secure two agendas to downsize panic and avoid a popular conclusion that these little bombs are here, because our big bombs are there.

As Madeline Albright stated when confronted with the hundredsof thousands of child deaths due to the U.S./British/OZ enforcement of the sanctions "We think it's worth the price!" Blair and Bush believe that these civilian casualties in London, Madrid, Bali, NYC, Baghdad, Afghanistan are worth the price when pursuing power, profit, empire.

The Ahern gombeens are quoted in the Irish Times today celebrating the doubling of U.S. military traffic through Shannon Airport. They know the main road from Baghdad Airport to downtown Baghdad is named "Route Irish" and they wish us to beleve that war will not come here.

The Catholic Worker doesn't think anyone is expendable (unlike empire that believes everyone is expendable from JFK down to the cannon fodder that passes daily through Shannon to Iraqi & Afghani bodies they don't bother to count),.

We will read the names of Iraqi, London, U.S. military & civilian dead to shake off our sedation and stupor. We will continue to nonviolently confront Irish & other instiutions that co-operate and profit from this war. We refuse to go quietly in an atmosphere of cynicism, denial and despair.

You're welcome to join us and do some field work, engage the public, inform fellow irish citizens that 153,000+ troops have passed through Shannon in the first 6 months of this year, a number equivalent to the whole of last year.

Also Check out Tom Cloonan's article below as a part of your quantitative/qualitative research.

Paying €10,000 a day for US military overflights has not really registered on the taxpayers' radar
