Workers Solidarity Movement presents: The Corporation

category dublin | arts and media | event notice author Wednesday February 09, 2005 17:21author by WSM - WSM Report this post to the editors

This Sunday Feb 13th, at 3pm,in our new office - The Workers Solidarity Movement presents The Corporation -A film by Mark Achbar, Jennifer Abbott, Joel Bakan and Harold Crooks. The screening is the first in an upcoming series of Anarchist Cultural Afternoons organised by the WSM and open to all.

Based on Bakan’s book The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, the film is a timely, critical inquiry that invites CEOs, whistle-blowers, brokers, gurus, spies, players, pawns and pundits on a graphic and engaging quest to reveal the corporation’s inner workings, curious history, controversial impacts and possible futures. Featuring illuminating interviews with Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore, Howard Zinn and many others, THE CORPORATION charts the spectacular rise of an institution aimed at achieving specific economic goals as it also recounts victories against this apparently invincible force.

One hundred and fifty years ago, the corporation was a relatively insignificant entity. Today, it is a vivid, dramatic and pervasive presence in all our lives. Like the Church, the Monarchy and the Communist Party in other times and places, the corporation is today’s dominant institution. But history humbles dominant institutions. All have been crushed, belittled or absorbed into some new order. The corporation is unlikely to be the first to defy history. In this complex and highly entertaining documentary, Mark Achbar, co-director of the influential and inventive MANUFACTURING CONSENT: NOAM CHOMSKY AND THE MEDIA, teams up with co-director Jennifer Abbott and writer Joel Bakan to examine the far-reaching repercussions of the corporation’s increasing preeminence."

3pm Sunday Feb 13th.

Is this being shown on a Big Screen?

LASC is certainly not a WSM front. We merely have rented offices in the same building.

Indeed the WSM has never set up fronts (unlike the SWP's Globalise Resistance or the SP's Youth Against War). Anarchist politics are not compatible with that sort of dishonest carry on.

Sorry to disappoint you.

LASC has its office in the same building, and was there for years before the WSM moved in.

LASC is only mentioned because some of you will have been to their office, and it helps to explain where the WSM office is.

But prehaps it woulb be better not to use the phrase
"the WSM/LASC" offices as this will only get you into "SF/IRA" kind of trouble.

Anyway, the Dublin Grassroots Network is a WSM front.

What type of screen are you using? Is it a large one or will it just be a 20 inch TV screen?

I'd be interested in hearing why you think DGN is a front as if this impression exists it is a problem that should be tackled. I presume your referring to something more than the fact WSM members are involved in it, could you spell it out?

What type of screen will the film be shown on?

It will be an innovative impression of the film using hand and shadow puppets.

So, Danny, are you going to back that up? Or are you just spreading unsubstantiated lies around? You must be a brave and principled individual.

Are you showing a DVD on a TV or do you have a big screen?

I think it's a tv, but since I haven't been involved in organising it, I don't know for sure. Maybe it's a tiny projector, maybe it's a huge tv?

To be fair now I dont think that Youth Against War was a front. (does it exist now????) must be invisible if it does

By "front" I mean that a group is controlled by a party covertly.

YAW is not a front in this sense because the SP openly ( at least in their paper ) associate with as part of the party.

I dont see the problem as long as theyre open.

The SWP never do this
The "Irish Antiwar Movement" is the SWP plain and simple
SO is "Globalise resistence"
"Another Europe is possible"
"The civil rights movement"

Notice the utter branding involved here. The idea is to attract the young and the inexperience to be part of the elite "vanguard party" of Lenin

And the SWP never ever claim any connection. Like state agencies you have to dig the info out of them. Basically their control is covered up.
They follow a classic entryist strategy , of recruiting a "periphery"

As virtually every political party in Ireland will not work with them ( including the peace movement) This is why all their fronts fail in the end. But damage is done to the broader movement.

They drive people out of left wing politics because this fills them with despair, cynicism and demoralisation.

Never work with their party, only with the individual members who are prepared to play on a level playing pitch.

well in the end it was just a tv and there were a few technical difficulties but a its a great piece, entertaining as well as educational.
polemics can be fun.
