Ramadan has begun in Londonistan. It's another sign of how Islam is encroaching on Western culture, says Tim Dieppe. It's a long time since critics of any other religion were imprisoned. But don't you dare insult Islam!

Car Free Day Critical Mass!

category dublin | environment | event notice author Tuesday September 14, 2004 22:04author by Starstruck - UCD/DGN Report this post to the editors

Assemble Garden Of Rememberance Wed 22nd at 6pm

Calling all cyclists, skateboarders, rollerbladers, pedestrians and anything without an engine
self- powered
self- powered

Global Car-free day is a victorious day of actions on four continents reclaiming our streets and our lives from the automobile.
The Car Free Day festival’s intention is to raise awareness of the health and environmental benefits of sustainable living and sustainable transport, by leaving the car behind. The event is a fun day out where visitors and the local community can enjoy Dublin City Centre as a traffic-free urban space.
At the time of going to press our government seems to have shelved any plans to close O'Connell St for even a few hours..committing itself only to putting up a few posters "encouraging" motorists to leave the car at home.
This is despite a pledge signed by our own fave Minister Dempsey to participate in the global event,link-
http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/carfreeday/pledge_2001.pdf

So hear ye hear ye!
All those with any form of non-motorised transport (including your legs),be at the Garden of Rememberance at 6pm for a fun jaunt around your city.
Bring colour,noise,music and energy-

Spread the word to one and all!

anyone else thinking this is getting a bit jaded.. rts seems to have died off for the moment... nobody seems to be into doing the same things over and over again...

RTS in Ireland has already seen at least 3 almost entirely different 'crews' organising it. People do get jaded after doing a couple which is why it keeps getting passed on, the first couple are good crack but who wants to spend their lives doing the same thing over and over.

So hopefully this is an indication that a new set of people are thinking of doing the maining organising for the next couple, I'm sure the previous lot will be glad to see that and glad to give them a hand.

On Monday, September 13th the Nasa indigenous people of Colombia launched a big three-day march. Included in the march is a low-power FM radio station, broadcast from a radiocicleta (an adapted bicycle equipped with a radio transmitter and antenna that will accompany the march). The signal will be picked up along the route by different indigenous community radio stations and then streamed on the internet. It is likely no coincidence that on Friday Septemer 4, the indigenous community station Radio Nasa was shut down by the government of Colombian president Alvaro Uribe. The indigenous groups, composing tens of thousands of people are marching to protest against the war, neoliberalism, the FTAA, and constitutional counterreforms planned by the government. The Colombian Indymedia has ongoing coverage of the event.

Critical Mass is a cool event but it can be even more of a success if you have whistles, horns, bells and colour on it.
BVystanders like things that appear friendly and approachable so thats the way to go.
They may even join in...
Now to find my rollerblades

The above coments about things getting jaded etc reflects more on a generation that expects to be passively entertained schooled by techniques of infotainment fearful of ritual and depth basic to indegenous cultures. Don't turn up toa political event expecting to passively entertained as a consumer - schools out this ain't the movies!
