category dublin | summit mobilisations | news report author Tuesday May 04, 2004 02:09author by indyvid Report this post to the editors

over 3000 people marched on the gates of Phoenix Park. They were met by Gardai first, But it wasn't long before the water cannons were brought out. It was, as always, a good natured crowd and the majority were not intimadated by the tactics of the police. There were around 25 arrests and several injuries received largely from batton-happy Riot Cops

Moron's...the only words that come to mind regarding the may day riots. Why did those so called peaceful protesters make a complete arse of themselves and show up last sat...not only did they disgrace themselves but also showed up this great nation which thanks to years of hard graft has rightfully taken its place as one of the leading nations within the EU. As for heavy handed gardai...didnt see any of those-may have been at home watchin the whole thing on telly...Congrats by the way to the gardai and army..these professional forces handled the situation admirably and are a credit to the state... unlike the other spongers and social welfare claimers....sin e...

I already read the official media reports thanks. No need to vomit them back up for me.
I was assaulted while collecting cop numbers(on the back of police helmets i might add).Explain that,or better yet wait until all the police being dragged into the district courts since yesterday start fessing up.

Social welfare spongers?
Violent morons?
You were indeed sitting n front of your tv,i wore my suit(being a lawyer and all). You can play back your video tapes,i'll be the one getting my head kicked in.

Kind regards you complete MORON.

Do you honestly think that there is any chance wahtsoever of taking action against the cops that stopped you taking their numbers?! You're lucky they were wearing numbers in the first place! Even if it did go to court the judge would side with the Gardaí. That's their class interests. Concentrate on building a movement in the communities and trade unions. Forget excapades in the bourgeois courts for last saturday's cop actions.

And don't forgot to sign undertakings with the bourgeois council.

Where was AngryLiberal and his law respecting followers in the Labour and Green Parties when the anti Bin Tax campaigns defied the courts and 'illegally' blockades depots and stopped trucks?

"And don't forgot to sign undertakings with the bourgeois council."

What are these "undertakings" that members of the SP "troika" were supposed to have signed. I've a keen interest in the law and I can tell you the Council did not and cannot send "undertakings" to people in the post and threaten court action. Lunacy.

If there is such a thing I might send indymedia trolls "undertakings" in the post to stop them acting the muppet and then get them locked up they don't write back by return post.

I forgot to mention
by Count Binula Tuesday, Mar 23 2004, 1:35pm

Matthew Waine, John Daniel and Alan Lee who were among the Blachardstown activists who refused to give an undertaking and expected to be jailed but were let off on a technicality.
Paul Murphy gave an undertaking for personal reasons at that stage but has been in the thick of it in South Dublin since.

The morning being refered to in Collins Avenue there was a small blocade comprising of SP members, WCA members and a few activists from Finglas. Other activists including ISN members and Joe Higgins who had been jailed stood on the pavement to avoid rearrest and a seriously longer jail sentences which is fair enough, they had done their bit. There is photographic evidence of this blockade. No Shinners or Swimmers were around.

The names of the SP and WCA people and activists were taken. The SP members whose names were taken were Kevin McLoughlin, Michael O'Brien, Stephen Boyd and Donal Greene. WCA members had their names taken as well.
Stephen, Michael, Donal and the WCA activists were written to by Dublin City seeking an undertaking of no more protests. Council. Kevin McLoughlin wasn't written to. The letters arrived around the same time as the people in Tallaght had been jailed with minimal publicity and the unions gone into hiding at that stage. By then each jailing was having less of an effect then the previous, provoking a discussion regarding the effectiveness of sending more people in, especially people from outside the local authority area: O'Brien (Swords), Greene (Bayside), Boyd (Cork). It was clear that the corpo were seeking to single out people from outside the area to paint a false picture of outside agitators. If it was just those comrades and the WCA people jailed we had to factor in the prospect of the communities and unions been mobilised. All by the way while giving written undertakings were at further protests in Fingal.

The point here is not Greene, Boyd and O'Brien (that makes one full timer versus the four that either went to jail or were prepared to) or WCA members were too important to go to jail but that the amount of legal skirmishes SP members got into clearly demonstrates that Sinn Fein and the SWP with a handful of exceptions steered clear of blockades full stop. And by the way the point of the excercise was effective blockades not jailing figures and had SF and SWP put in the same effort as SP, WCA (whose members also gave an undertaking on foot of Collins Ave) and ISN to mobilise people from their respective communities the blockades would have been far stronger.
