SIPTU Branch takes up Coca Cola campaign

category national | anti-capitalism | news report author Monday March 29, 2004 20:22author by Alan MacSimoin - Workers Solidarity Movement Report this post to the editors

At the annual general meeting of SIPTU's Education Branch - which organises 2,000 workers in colleges - a motion calling for no investment in Coca-Cola by our pension funds (or by SIPTU's own pension fund) was carried.

This is in support of the campaign by Columbian workers and their unions to halt the intimidation and murder of trade union activists in Coca Cola bottling plants.

This is just a start, can you get a similar motion passed at your next union meeting?

I'm in that branch, yet I was told anything about the AGM. I would have liked to go along. How do you find out when the meetings are on?

Usually notices are sent out to shop stewards, who whould then pass them on to the members on their job.

But there can sometimes be breakdowns in communication - you could contact the branch office in Liberty Hall and ask to be put on the branch email list for union statements and notices.

If you drink the non-diet version of Coca-Cola or any other soft drinks, they are full of sugar. And the news, long suppressed, is that sugar in that quantity is very bad for you.

The Ecologist recently did a special report on the effects of sugar called: Sugar and Spin at:
http://www.theecologist.org/archive_article.html?article=438&category=53

Other reports such as this one: Tumors Feed off Sugar:
http://www.meds.com/archive/mol-cancer/1998/08/msg02967.html

And yet another: The Harmful Effects of Soft Drinks
http://members.aol.com/profchm/Soft.html

Intake of soft-drinks (non-diet) is clearly linked to obesity.

And now to the other reason. If you decide to drink the diet forms of Coca-cola and other soft drinks, well don't. They contain artificial sweeteners. Look on the side of the can and you will seen Aspartame listed. This is an articifical sweetner. It should never have been allowed come on the market. The breakdown products of it are harmful.

For more about artifical sweeteners such as Aspartame, see:
The Bitter Truth About Artificial Sweeteners
http://www.truthcampaign.ukf.net/articles/health/aspartame.html

So you see folks whatever way you look at it, you are not only helping workers get killed but you are slowly killing yourself too, no matter what brand or type you drink.

You are better off drinking water. And that would be non-fluoridated water too!!
