Dublin Grassroots Network - Mayday No Borders weekend line-up of events

Friday April 30th

CRITICAL MASS began in San Francisco in 1992 and has since spread around the world. Join us for this celebration of non-motorised transport, as we take a leisurely tour of the city streets, on bikes, skateboards, pogo sticks, or just on foot.

Saturday May 1st (daytime)

BORDER CONTROLS STREET THEATRE: Welcome to the official day of the new Fortress Europe. Warning: You may be subject to stops by one of the Dublin Grassroots Police Network who will be patrolling the city in the morning. Experience the full reality of Fortress Europe with ID & background checks, verbal harassment, intimidation, and possible imprisonment without trial if you do not measure up to the strict criteria.

BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS: During the war on Iraq, many private and state businesses supported the transport of murderous arms and US troops through Shannon Airport in Ireland. This action will make the public aware of who they are by painting the streets and footpaths around their premises in blood red colour. No war should ever be supported for profit.

WELCOME THE BOAT PEOPLE: Many asylum seekers and refugees attempting to breach the Fortress Europe barrier do so in boats and ships. Upon detection, they are often sent back to their country of origin. This time however, the people arriving by boat will be welcomed. No human being is illegal - everyone should be free to travel and live where they want without fear of persecution.

HOMES NOT JAILS: Dublin expands, swallowing up the countryside. Rents skyrocket and house prices are beyond the reach of many with average incomes. The number of homeless people sleeping on the streets rises every year without any action by the State. Yet all around the city are derelict buildings, crumbling into the ground. This action aims to highlight this appaling situation by occupying one of these buildings and transforming it into a living space.

PUBLIC BEATINGS STREET THEATRE: Europe is reverting to old-style policing and jailing policies. Rather than look at what causes crime and dealing with problems in society, the State increasingly utilises prisons (often in terrible unsanitary condition) as a way of sweeping the issues under the carpet. How long before the stocks and gallows make a return? Today's the day. Come along and watch true medieval punishment methods.

THE POLLUTER PAYS: The message during the recent anti bin tax campaign was to tax the polluter. Is the public responsible for waste when companies release their products in layers of unneccesary packaging? How much waste is produced by heavy industry that is not recycled? This actions will be encouraging everyone to bring their recyclable packaging back to the the businesses that produce it.

RECLAIM THE CITY: The idea of the "common" or public space is rapidly disappearing from the city, as rich and powerful individuals claim it for private personal use. This action will temporarily reclaim a part of private land, and open it to the public for a picnic and games in the May sunshine.

Saturday May 1st (evening)

BRING THE NOISE! The EU Ministers dine in the opulence of Farmleigh House on Saturday evening at the expense of the Irish taxpayer. We intend to march to their doorstep and disrupt their dinner, to show them that we do not agree with their vision of Fortress Europe! Bring pots and pans, bells and whistles, horns and drums to generate the biggest noise possible. May 1st is historically a day for the ordinary people's wishes to be heard. They have chosen to ignore us but they cannot keep it up if we scream and shout. This event now takes place at the GPO at 6pm May 1st. See post below for link to Press Release

Sunday May 2nd

NO BORDERS, NO NATIONS - NO BORDER CAMP: Join us as we set up a No Border camp on the 2nd day of the new Fortress Europe. We are not against the new ascension states citizens coming to Ireland - we think all refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants should be allowed to travel here, regardless of origin, ethnicity, or background. The No Border camp will be open to everyone. Activities will include workshops, discussions, teach-ins, planning for the future, as well as music and food.

Monday May 3rd

NO BORDERS RECLAIM THE STREETS: The only party worth joining in town! Reclaim The Streets happens again on the May bank holiday to wind down the weekend. Unlike the State's street party, everyone from around the world is welcome to come to Dublin for this, not just those that satisfy the demands of Fortress Europe. Expect music and dancing, drinking and face painting, a day for all to come and enjoy a vision of the Europe that we really want.

That this has been up for nearly a week without a single comment makes me think that the events listing is perhaps not quite working. Might be good if they appeared briefly on the newswire (eg until five more articles were posted) before vanishing into the distance.

Or of course people could 'cheat' be commenting on an event after they have posted it. A lot of this seems to be going on

author by R Isible - Indymedia Irelandpublication date Thu Mar 25, 2004 18:17author address author phone Report this post to the editors

It just shows that there are no comments. You may be right, but a clearly written event notice doesn't necessarily attract a whole pile of comments.

And in fact there are discussions about putting the events in the far-left column. Suggestions are better directed to the editorial list than in comments on your own event.

I notice that your event listing is a single listing containing multiple dates. It'd make the Events section work better if you were to break it up into multiple listings (one for each date). The idea was that someone can check for a particular date and see what's on. They'd miss your last few days.

Events were pulled out of the newswire because they didn't work there and IMHO they shouldn't go back in.

I'd go along with R Isibles suggestion that each of the events should be listed individually for the day on which they will take place, but....

it's a very rare beast which is read by many people and doesn't attract comments on this site (for example this post now has three comments!!! and none of them are about the events listed ;) and I know that my own habits on the site have changed from pseudo-random surfing to checking out the top few newswire stories and the comments list (which is how I came to look at this event listing). I very rarely check the events section and therefore probably miss quite a bit. In the case of this particular posting, it is practically a story all on its own and the full list should be on the newswire not the events list imho. The site is still young and constantly developing (and I know this is not the place for discussing such things, there's a list....) but I don't feel that automatically banishing anything with a future date in it to the events section is a benificial way to go. (there, I didn't even mention the word policy ;)

1. Plan your event
2. Put it in the event calendar as a simple no frills or bells and whistles announcement with an illustration / logo / visual. The reason for the visual is that editors can choose to highlight an event by putting an image at the top of the newswire when the event is announced or as it approaches. Including an image or logo does not guarantee this service but makes it more likely to happen.
3. Write an informative article about the subject of the event or the signifigance of the event - the issues the event is highlighting - news to do with the buildup of the event etc - publish these as opinion or analysis on the newswire including a link to the event notice. It'll spend days on the wire - provoke discussion and maybe even get picked by an editor as a feature. In fact you can even propose an article as a feature yourself on the editorial list.
4. Advanced Course: Put a feature together yourself and submit for approval to editorial list. Use HTML if you can. If you can't just put links in brackets after the words you would like to be hyperlinks. This would be great and do the editors work for them - which of course is the whole idea of IMC.

I think having a seperate events section in part to unclog the newswire is a good idea. But as Barry also demonstrates I don't think many users of the site actually check the events section all that often. Newusers probably just check the newswire, regular users probably check the comments listing.

I thought the lack of comments probably reflected a lack of people reading it because the similar posting of the March 1st plan last year caused a huge discussion. I suspect the lack of discussion here is simply down to people not seeing it.

I think the various site improvements that have gone on are great but something more needs to be done to push the events section. Two suggestions
1. - Link relevant upcoming events into a section at the bottom of relevant articles so that for instance a link to an event under 'Anti-War, Dublin' turns up under an article classified as 'anti-war, Dublin'.
2. - Make new events visable briefly on the newswire when they are posted and the day before they occur.

EC thanks for the concrete suggestions. These apply well to people who know their way around the site but not so much perhaps to those who don't.

I don't fancy a picnic if there's a risk of confrontation with property owners or police. Anyone know of any family friendly events at the weekend? Apart from that, the reclaim the streets thing all sounds very vague, unless there's more information I don't know how we are supposed to support the event.

author by Joepublication date Tue Apr 20, 2004 17:45author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Hi Carmel, not all the DGN events are intended to be family friendly, some are the equivalent of sit-ins and with the media madness its a little hard to know how the guards might react to them.

However the 'family friendly' events include the Critical Mass, the Farmleigh march, Sundays 'no borders' camp and Mondays No Borders RTS. Short of some sort of massive infringement of civil liberties by the guards no one should even be arrested at any of these.

Some of the others like the 'blood on your hands' obviously include a level of civil disobediance/Non Violent Direct Action. So some participants may be arrested, just as over 60 people were arrested last year for peaceful opposition to the war and refuelling at Shannon.

By No means, just because someone doesn't leave a comment, it Doesn't mean that someone doesn't read it. Ever since I came back to the IndyMedia Web Site I have read almost every singe post!! I have left comments too. Even though I am Not in a position to do very much at the moment. What I do is NOT buy ANYTHING from China anymore till they STOP using Forced Labour Camps!! Wall-Mart is a prime example of this. They know whats going on in China!! They stock a LOT of things from China. I never knew this, unless I've read a label on something I was looking at in the store in the last few years(actually, I just thought that I've known in the last several years that some things were made in China, but NOT at the expense of Forced Labour), but I never knew what was going on in China. I also might have heard of a bit of sweatshops in China, but I NEVER knew HOW BAD it Really was.
Then I went into Wall-Mart and the Dollar Stores(stores that sell their items for $1.00 or around that(in Canadian dollars). Then I started to really look at the tags and a lot of things were made in China! Some people know the Chinese are torturing the Tibetans and imprisoning them for being a peacefull loving nation that harms NO One...and also Taking Their Land. Thats a Crime that has to be Solved!!
Please Go to: http://www.anonymization.net/http://www.buyhard.fsnet.co.uk/boycottchinafortibet.htm
I would bet that a lot of people go to indymedia to see all the news and then know where to rally and to meet(if you want to post such info)...here where I live there is a definite assortment of peacefull organizations to the NeoLiberals as a vehicle to Positive Change!! I am SO BUSY a Lot that all I have time for is reading IndyMedia and catching up on the Real News. The other day I had nothing to do except have the day to Myself, for a Change, ha ha - then I saw a couple of things I needed to do, but never had time all along to do.
Theres SO Much to do in LIFE. Epecially, if you have someone else in your Life and then volunteer at a job and theres so much to arrange and DO. So there you have it. Thank YOU for being SO Understanding. This is the second time I have ever written to anyone in your Country before. I think of you as Brothers and Sisters! Keep up the GOOD work. I'll do more when I can. I just do a bit at a time when and if I can. This is the 1st time I went on an Earth Walk and even then I made a Difference in a few lives...thats SO Empowering!!! Please take Care of Yourselves!
