Reuters News agency reports on Noam Chomsky's Havana speech

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Thursday October 30, 2003 14:31author by Maubere Report this post to the editors

Chomsky gets coverage in mainstream press (at last!!!!!)

For some unknown reason, finacial newsagency, Reuters, has reported on a speech given by Noam Chomsky in Havana, this is the first time I have ever seen a corporate news source report directly on anything Chomsky has said, strange times indeed!!!

I think the reason is obvious.

So the right wingers can label him as pro-Castro and anti-American.
Look at the discomfort ex-pres Carter caused on his visit to Cuba.

I'd be interested to see the smug smear job that Sheppard Smith or someother FOX 'journalist' pours out on this one.

Sean Penn criticised for visiting Iraq, but correspondingly little coverage of protests taking place at home.

The filtered message... critics are in bed with our enemies.

There's Sean Penn in Iraq, there's Chomsky in Cuba ... (Fonda in Vietnam) tut, tut, those people are worse than Benedict Arnold
(no,not the guy who married Rosanne Barr)

It makes a much 'better' story than "hey look, there's millions of ordinary americans saying the President is wrong!"

Yes ladies and gentlemen of the Free World, we here at Sucks-Cox News have discovered a fifth column within our own free democratic soceity. This column, going under various guises, mainly concerns itself with such pathetic isuues such as labor rights, transparency and undermining our heroic troops in the field.

This column is led by none other than the self hating Jew Noam Chomsky. It is clear what his agenda is just by looking at this picture, and not addressing any of the points made in his speech to the oppressed Cuban people. Chomsky was also reported to have had a gay sex orgy with Castro and the bones of Che Guevara, as well as other high ranking Cuban officials.

Why listen to this anti-american american and anti-semetic jew pontificate on issues he clearly knows nothing about, when we here at Sucks-Cox can give you the view of the world YOU want to see. No corruption, no death, just plain ole good times. Why rely on fcats when teh imagination is a wonderful thing. Go back to bed citizens. (This message was sponsored by Halliburton, the oil company you can trust)

U.S. Dissident Says Bush Needs Fear for Reelection
by Anthony Boadle

HAVANA - U.S. linguist and political dissident Noam Chomsky said on Wednesday that President Bush will have to "manufacture" another threat to American security to win reelection in 2004 after U.S failure in occupying Iraq.

Chomsky, attending a Latin American social sciences conference in Cuba, said that since the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, the Bush administration had redefined U.S. national security policy to include the use of force abroad, with or without U.N. approval.

"It is a frightened country and it is easy to conjure up an imminent threat," Chomsky said at the launching of a Cuban edition of a book of interviews published by the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, when asked how Bush could get reelected.

"They have a card that they can play ... terrify the population with some invented threat, and that is not very hard to do," he said.

dealing with the planned "Pie-ing" of Noam Chomsky should he accept the invitation made by Mayor Joan Clos of Barcelona to attend the Forum of Cultures in Barcelona 2004 has now almost been finalised and is progressing beyond the skittish stage to a cogent and prinicipled statement on the values held dear in that city.
It shall be discussed over the weekend, and after "a primary vote" I shall return to let the Irish assembly know where the "Pie/Pi Chomsky 2004" campaign is going.

only 191 days left till BCN does the millenium dome and uses your heroes to sell tickets.

I told you all that Chomsky was a false prohpet, a charlatan, a lying little campus hypocrite.

As for calling the jailing of Cuban dissidents merely "a mistake". Puke. Rotten little maggot.

so Chomsky signs a petition condemning Cuba for violating the rights of political prisoners (along with other liberatarian leftists in the USA), is condemned, attacked and pressured for doing so by the Fidelistas and blind flag-wavers of authoritarian leftist persuasion, yet still opposes the USA's terrorist assaults on Cuba, goes to give a speech there and still doesn't miss the opportunity to say that it's a mistake to imprison political prisoners and somehow he's guilty of hypocrisy or something?

Seems to me he's taking a clear, consistent line and refusing to dance to the drum of either the authoritarian leftists or the authoritarian capitalists.

Does that clarify things for you "it's either GW Bush or F. Castro" poodles?

your comments are truely enlightening...so much more than chomsky's linguistic and political contributions spanning nearly forty years...i think we shoud go shopping...let's meet up and go shopping..let's buy lots. really.

and the next generation of theorists that move Chomsky's thought forward do so to the betterment of all mankind, yet there is now most definitely a space "made" for Chomsky and "chomskyites" in the anglo-saxon psycho-linguistic world, and it is fast serving to distract from his work, and will soon serve to "neutralise the sting".

Castro would be a good one to pie/pi as well.
If that makes anyone feel better.

Ireland went silly considering a 5000€ gift by Coca Cola to SF, Coca Cola have not disclosed their contribution to Forum 2004, and haven't seen fit to write a "propaganda paragraph" for the sponsers page, they prefer to refer the reader to their spanish website which this year promoted their product with the slogan:
"Unite el movimiento" which means "Unite the Movement".
Maybe it is smug to suggest that this is _wrong_.
IT is also worth considering that many of Chomsky's followers in both linguistic and marxist fields don't want him to accept the invititation either.

it appears the BCN Forum of cultures is the most latin you'll get.
so that list of sponsers again (in english)
http://www.barcelona2004.org/eng/quees/patrocinadores.htm#agbar
check out what "Damm" have to say for themselves in the sponser propoganda paragraph. They are proud to continue their relationship, olympics, etc., etc., They make beer. Cheap and Cheerful Beer.
They are sponsering a forum to encourage world understanding. This is silly. I'll give you a clue...
Over a billion people don't drink alcohol.
I'll give you another clue...
Damm brewery as all breweries does it's best to support municipal and governmental initiatives to reduce: underage drinking; drink driving; consumption of alcohol on the street. [The last indeed which is illegal in the Spanish state].
Now back to clue "1". Many of the "sin papales" of muslim ethnic background who live in Barcelona have few options for work, and sell beer (without license) on the street to whomever will buy a can for 1€. If it is very late @ night and the purchaser seems very "ianqui" or very "northern european" the can can cost anything up to 2€.

read the propaganda paragraph:
http://www.barcelona2004.org/eng/quees/patrocinadores.htm#agbar

now I suggest if you can not "believe" the propaganda paragraph sitting @ your PC in Ireland, then it is _much harder_ to take seriously if every day whilst commuting in the city of Barcelona you see the logo of "Forum 2004" on all these companies advertising. Though indeed not all the sponsers advertise, many try to avoid drawing public attention to their activities, & sponsering "Forum 2004 of cultures" is a means to counter that "negative public perception", and for such companies the proposed address by Professor Chomsky (of whom I am proud to be a little helper) pushes credibility to the ridiculous.
