'Eco-anxiety' affects 78% of children under 12, a crisis that teachers say they are unable to cope with, new polling by Greenpeace has found. The solution? More ruthless exposure of children to alarmist material.

Tallaght to protest against the "Bin Tax" Saturday

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | news report author Friday September 19, 2003 13:44author by KS - Socialist Party Report this post to the editors

Notice of a protest in Tallaght this saturday

The protest was agreed at a successful meeting of possibly more than 200 people in the Plaza Hotel Tallaght of concerned residents and activists addressed by Mick Murphy (SP) & Lisa Maher other groups were also in attendence, but failed to speak when the floor was opened up. The mood of the meeting was extremely militant with many people the vast bulk of whom had no links to any political party slamming local politicians (names that came up were Séan Crowe (SF) and the local "Labour" councillors) and the Trades Union bureaucracy for failing to actively do something to fight the Bin tax, a number of people also expressed interest in join the campaign against the refuse charges in Dublin South West.

We are meeting up at 2pm at the Bank of Ireland on Main Street Tallaght Village (Beside the old Iceland shopping centre & The Bridge to Dominics)Saturday 20th September.

The 65A/B the 56A go past the Bank of Ireland where the march is assembling

The 77 - get out at the bycyle shop near the roadworks and beside the esso station, cross at the esso station - Iceland is opposite it to the left.

The 77a/49 go through the bottom of Tallaght Village, get off at the TSB bank and walk down past the priory, past the esso station.

All buses to Tallaght Village from town can be got at Eden quay or Dame street.

SFs active opposition to the Bin Taxes is well known. Are you a troll? Do the SP agree with this attempt to gain glory for the SP by attacking SF?

Do the SP really believe this is the way to build the campaign?

Taoiseach says tax dodgers are spongers, Today FM news, 2pm
The taoiseach was interviewed about the bin charges and remarked that people who don't pay taxes are spongers.

Does this mean that the taoiseach accepts the campaigners argument that the bin-charges are a second tax on top of income tax? Does this mean he is going to name and shame tax dodgers in Fianna Fail and amongst friendly business men (don't hold your breath!)?

They just read out a barage of texts about the bin charges. All in favour of the campaign. 3 in a row were having a go at SF. Maybe this is some sort of orchestrated campaign by some anti-SF people, but I doubt it. You might claim that SF have been very active on the bin-tax, but that doesn't seem to be the general opinion. Personally I'll believe it when I see ye on the blockades. Money where your mouth is.

Exactly. I had no great love for the Socialist Party but it is them who are putting themselves on the line along with all the residents while Sinn Fein oppose the charges only in words. As the poster above says, its about putting your money where your mouth is.

I went down to the courts today and on Wednesday. In all that time I saw only two elected representatives down there supporting Joe Higgins and Clare Daly of the SP. They were Tony Gregory and Finian McGrath the independent TDs. Not one of the Sinn Fein TDs or councillors bothered their arse to show up.

Maybe other people will have forgotten that by the time the next election comes round but Im telling you that I wont.

Sinn Féin have voted against the bin charges and are involved in all of the local campaigns. In fact in several city areas, it is republicans who are to the forefront of the whole thing. The SP are showing their true motives in all of this which is to undermine SF as the charges are their last hope of making inroads into working class areas in the City Council. That has always been the role of Trotskyism. Not to take on the state but to undermine the revolutionary left, and all wrapped up in shite about "undermining the illusions of the workers and youth in Stalinism/reformism/provoism" blah de blah. And coincidentially their main enemies are usually the major threat to the state. And why should SF just drop everything just to protest at poor old Joe and Clare? Where were they when people were being tortured and murdered and railroaded by the state? On the same fucking side as the branch and the death squads, ....sorry workers in uniform. That's where. SP are making hames of this campaign and haven't a clue where to go next so why should the rest of them help them out. They'll be calling for a general strike next...

A bin truck was stopped for a brief period in Donaghmede this morning by a group of six activists, three of whom were Sinn Féin members including the party's local representative Killian Forde.

Sinn Féin may not be aware that the party has a responsibility higher than that which it owes to the people, a responsiblity to please trolls and trots on Indymedia. Unaware that they are of this, they may occasionally forget to clear everything with Chekov and Co.

Yez are very touchy - I've never had a go at SF over this, all I've said is 'money where your mouth is' - and I really hope that that is what we are starting to see. The day that I ask anybody to 'clear' anything with me, is the day that I ask everybody to ignore me.
