not a criticism but would food not bombs be better served by maybe also feeding some people that could do with food i.e. the homeless, maybe the elderly living alone etc.

Its just looks like a lot of well fed (and some not so well fed) are feasting for free outside McD's.

Food not bombs are a fantastic group of people who i honestly cannot have enough respect for. As far as i know they do make an effort to also feed homeless people but what they're doing outside mcds is just as worthwhile. Most people would never dream of trying vegetarian or vegan food but if they were given some for free it might open up their eyes a little, they are also offering a healthy alternative to the corporate heroin offered by the fast "food" outlets and making a anti capitalist statement all at once.

I read an interview a while back with a guy who did food not bombs in the US. They used to go to the local courts and set up a stall feeding the people who were waiting for their cases to come up on the day. Might be an idea?

Yaeh nice one cleaver , we can go and make sandwiches for the scumbag who broke my mates nose and robbed his phone, maybe a salad roll and some hummus for the guys who broke into the house down the road, tied up the occupants and liberated them of their money and jewellry.

Food Not Bombs gives us all a happy break from the idea that everything is for sale and that food has to be horrible processed crap.

W.r.t. "another victim of crime", your post only makes sense if you believe that everyone that goes to court or gets charged with something is guilty.

More power to FNB for going out and doing something to make life better.

an offer was made by FNBers to do a soup kitchen a while back but one of the main homeless charities said they prefered to use powdered soup and turned down the offer of homemade (by occassionally homeless people) vegan goodies in favour of knorrs (tax-deductable???) donations.

looks like ye had fun the other day, hope to see y'all in a kitchen somewhere real soon.

Deadly job. Great to hear about the action. Met some FNB Dutch people recently and got some good ideas and also heard about tours they do and doing FNB with other groups in other countries. Anyway I've lots of energy to get back involved when I return...whenever that is!

They are pretty conventional and mainstream generally, and would be unlikely to go for anything too radical or even alternative. The government knows this of course and buys them off easily with some funding and a few jobs. A good example is John O Shea of Goal who has been known to whine for american military intervention as a solution for problems in the underdeveloped world.

Well done one and all. quick response to some queries; the choice to remain vegan/vegetarian is for a multitude of reasons, for one thing spoilage is far less likely, another is that the vast majority of people who are involved are aware of the raping of the earth that is the direct symptom of the meat industry. the wanton destruction that occurs so you can have your artery clogging pound of flesh, is something the powers that be would rather they alone knew. Too Late!!! the charities concerned have indeed been approached and are reluctant for the reasons mentioned above along with a plethora of others. such arbitrary and nonsensical rules as the suits in brussels are inclined to fart out every now and then regarding health and safety etc.

food not bombs is more than a punky picnic or a student notion it is a very valid means of resistance, challenging the illusions of scarcity of our dependance on a monetary system, on the meat industry for balanced health and so much more. it's shit loads of fun and stops needless waste.
the food is never of dubious quality. the bread is often so fresh when we collect it, it is still hot. i kid you not.
good on ye. only wish i was around for the shits and giggles. and remember: don't let adam near the rice. EVER.

I think many of the homeless charities may be less than forthcoming with help as it may be counter-productive to their goals. Working with homelessness require long and continuous commitment - something they may think you cannot provide. There are also the implications on the hand-out culture. Many questione the merits of handing-out food or even giving money to beggers. They see it as perpetuating and solidifying the cycles of homelessness, but thats another kettle.

On a more philosophical note its interesting to think that FMB are dependant on some of the systems that the aspire to destroy.

anyway its a good idea but its not the only idea.

it is not really a question of dependance. strikes me, that is looking at the horse walking backwards. FNB takes food that is perfectly edible but would be otherwise dumped and i might add, in many cases deliberatly rendered inedible; in many outlets staff are instructed to stamp on, dye, bleach and otherwise taint food. I understand some chapters of FNB also cultivate their own food to supplement that which they collect. there are hundreds of independant chapters around the globe and in the autonomous spirit in which we exist, many operate differently. appropriating the notion of dependance suggests we are merely service providers, i would like to stress again the importance of FNB as a form of resistance against war, capitalism, greed, waste and destruction of natural resources, and as a form of education of same.
regardless, the bulk of waste occurs in larger outlets and though loath to support such epitomes of globalisation's ills, i for one, am more than happy to expose and exploit the wanton, decadent waste with which they operate.

I respect the notion of taking the food that would otherwise go to waste and giving it to those who need it (or dont by the looks of it) but I fail to see how this is a form of resitance to war etc. In a way it legitimises the waste cycles that are created by mass production systems.

I still dont see how it actually works to prevent war. How much of the food actually was produced/grown by FNB. I still think its a great idea but dont be over-imaginative about what the by-product of your action is.
