Coca-Cola sued over bottling plant 'terror campaign'

Julian Borger in Washington
Saturday July 21, 2001
The Guardian

''Coca-Cola distanced itself from its bottling plants yesterday. "The Coca-Cola company does not own or operate any bottling plants in Colombia," a corporate spokesman, Rafael Fernandez said.

"We deny any wrongdoing regarding human rights or any other unlawful activities in Colombia or anywhere else in the world."

Daniel Kovalik, a US steelworkers' lawyer, said that Coca-Cola had stepped in to curb human rights abuses in Guatemala after three union leaders had been killed in the 1980s. That intervention showed that the company could stop the killings if it chose to, he argued.''

Coca-Cola: Continuing the Battle in Kerala, India

''More than a year after local people started complaining of massive extraction of ground water by the bottling unit of Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Ltd. and the consequent depletion and contamination of well water in Plachimada village in Palakkad district, the Kerala State Health Department has come up with data that validate the charges. The medical officer of the Public Health Center in the village recently informed the Perumatty Grama Panchayat that people should not drink water from the three wells neighboring the Coca-Cola plant.''

Is in fact a part of a Georgian Dixie-loving hillbilly racist hate party's pathetic attempt at respectability by cashing-in on anti-corporate anger. It is only a populist ploy. These people are muckers simultaneously with UDA, LVF, National Front, Ulster Independence and International Third Position wackos. Just look at their links on Ireland.

I was there - for about five minutes. I talked to someone handing out leaflets, they werent too crazy but they did ask me to sign a petition and ask if I was interested in getting more in involved with GR. No thanks.

So as far as I could see here's what happened: the Socialist Wor... I mean Globalise Resistance showed up with a table parked a bit down from the entrance.

They handed out leaflets. They held some placards in the air. Six cops stood around. And then they all went home.

No wonder people accuse GR of sucking all the life out of the anti capitalist movement. I wasnt at the Food Not Bombs picnic in Bray but from watching the video it looked really good - combine a direct action (blocking the door of McDonalds) and also presenting an alternative - i.e. healthy, vegetarian food.

Simple yet imaginative and exciting. What do GR have to offer apart from some placards and some really badly designed posters that make an attempt at subertising? (exactly how does using the 'Coke' font to write 'Globalise Resistance' work as subvertising??)

For a brief, brief period, GR were actually interesting. In June 2001 I think it was, they had a protest just down the road from McDonalds against River Island, same company as the Gap. They occupied the top floor. Grace Lally and Rory Hearne rolled a banner out the window and Grace even threw some clothes out onto the street.

But since then they've done FUCK ALL, suffer from a lack of spontaneity and imagination. No wonder they disappeared for a year.

Questions relating to Cikes involvement in Columbia
Could somebody please clarify something for me? - A relation of mine works for Coca Cola, & that person insists the whole columbia thing is Balderdash. I wanna hit back, & am wondering what the story was with the cases against Coke in Columbia & Miami that were dismissed, & why were they so? (Me thinks collusion between prosecutors & the giant multinational, could be @ play!)

I'd be greatful for your help!

It might be best to find out from him where is his evidence of balderdash and who are what
are is his sources. Ask him if we has determined this from his managers, newspapers or what.

Also try and find out why he would find it hard to take the truth. People will frequently stick
rigidly to a certain line if they realize their whole view point or world view will be overturned
if they take on board opposing opinions and or facts. The issue might then be for him, that if he
knows it's true, he can't ignore the consequences and his own sense of morality, -i.e. he might
feel compelled to speak about it and in Colombia today, I would imagine you could quickly find your
life threatened and your friends distancing themselves from you.

I really love coke (not sure about the lemon stuff though) Now Im sure all you protestors on grafton street have drunk coke since you marched (or a coke owned product) Your hypocrisy sickens me.

author by Mikepublication date Fri Jul 25, 2003 14:23author address author phone Report this post to the editors

This may come as a surprise, but it is not unusual for "CocaCola" not to own foreign bottling plants. You need to keep in mind that many countires have requirements that local subsidiaries have to be majority local owned. Since a multinational like "CocaCola" primary asset is "goodwill" (brand recognition) they can put that up for their share while the locals put up the physical assets of the bottling plant.

Why don't you check out who owns the bottling plants where "Coke" is bottled in Ireland.

In other words, the "balderdash" may not be about "no anti-worker violence in the plants where Coke is bottled in Columbia" but "Coke doesn't own any bottling plants in Columbia".
