Eye witness report of action at bridge over the Aubonne

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday June 03, 2003 12:37author by Irish activists involved in action at bridge over Aubonne Report this post to the editors

A description of what actually happened at the action on the bridge on the Geneva-Lausanne motorway, from the point of view of 7 Irish activists who participated in the action.

We arrived at the bridge at about 5am. It is a motorway bridge over the river Aubonne on the Geneva- Lausanne motorway.
We stayed under the bridge, preparing our banners and climbing equipment. Everything was ready by about 7 am. We were waiting to hear,by mobile phone, when the convoy of G8 delegates were leaving from Geneva. The plan was to suspend a rope across the bridge with one person attached to each end. This would make it impossible for traffic to continue on from Geneva to Lausanne. The other side of the motorway was not blocked.
The others involved in the action were to go up onto the bridge first, stop the traffic and give the climbers time to get in place.
At about 10.30 we got the news that the convoy was on its way and the motorway exits and entrances at Geneva and Lausanne had been blocked off by police. 10 people went up onto the bridge and ran along the hard shoulder to the Geneva end of the bridge.
We had three banners: One said "Vous arretez ici ou vous tuez deux personnes" (Stop here or you will kill two people) Another said "Ne Tirez pas" (Don't shoot) and a third said "G8 Illegitime" . We stood across the road with the banners clearly visible to the traffic and stopped the traffic. We also went up to the cars and explained to the drivers what was happening and the importance of not driving through the rope. Once the traffic had been stopped 3 people assisted the climbers to get the rope across the bridge and themselves into position. The rope had brightly coloured material and strips of foil paper attached to it to make it visible. This was NOT a banner drop- all the banners were held in people's hands and were only there to alert the traffic to the fact that there were two people suspended by the rope under the bridge.
Some of the motorists who we had blocked were quite angry and got out of their cars to argue with us. Some tried to drive through the banners and we had to sit on the bonnet of one car to prevent it from doing so.Motorists started to turn their cars around and drive back down the motorway along the hard shoulder. The police arrived quite quickly and
tried to get us off the road. The police tried to break our line and were very agressive with us. They did not want to listen to our explanation of what was happening and seemed only interetsed in getting the traffic through. We lay down on the road to slow them down, and when they removed us we ran up the road towards the rope. More police arrived from the other side. The police lifted the rope on the left-hand side of the bridge, where the British man was suspended, and started letting traffic pass under it. There was also a motorist, who was very angry, standing there with them. Suddenly, we heard screaming and realised that the rope had been cut. None of us saw exactly who cut the rope, but it was later confirmed that it was one of the policemen. Some people managed to catch the other end of the rope before the woman climber also fell, and we all ran to the cut end of the rope and hung onto it to prevent her from falling too. There were 7 or 8 people holding onto the rope. One policeman helped us hold the rope too, and though he asked his colleagues to help us on 3 occasions, it was only very reluctantly, after about 5 minutes that one of them did. This policeman was also the one who called the ambulance. The others remained on the bridge. Meanwhile, one of the activists who is a doctor had gone down to the river to attend to the fallen climber. She splinted his leg, made him as comfortable and warm as possible and assissted him in every way she could. At no time was she helped by the police in doing this. After about ten minutes, we managed to anchor the broken rope and set up a new rope. The new rope was let down to the other climber and she abseiled down it into the river. At around this time, first the fire brigade and then the ambulance arrived. There was an ambulance car and an ambulance helicopter; the latter was used to take the injured man to hospital, so previous reports that the police blocked the ambulance from coming through are untrue.
The climber is badly injured but will be ok. The other climber was treated for shock in hospital, but is now out and is doing ok.
The activists on the bridge were taken to a police detention center and told on arrival that we were just witnesses and they wanted to take witness reports from us. We were later charged with blocking traffic on a motorway and being pedestrians on a motorway. We don't know if the climbers or other people involved have been charged. There is a criminal investigation into the incident going on and I have heard, though not had it confirmed, that the policeman who cut the rope has been arrested.

You utter rotters, how dare you disrupt commercial business activities and commercial traffic. You're actions are despicable to halt the flow of traffic, especially if police cut the rope holding you up and you fall into the road of on coming traffic. Have you no concern for the safety and wellbeing of cars using that road, some swizz buisness mans BMW may have been dented by the falling climber. Well really the inconsideration of it!!

a response to press misinformation

The iron fist of police brutality is still preventing us from piecing together the entire puzzle of events surrounding the Sunday blockades of the G8. And yet, the usual suspects are at it again. In the past 36 hours, some sections of the entertainment industry (also known as the corporate media) have happily jumped into their usual role: a campaign of disinformation, criminalisation and intimidation. This is happening in direct support of the state terrorism being exercised, as we speak, against thousands of people in Lausanne, Geneva and Annemasse. We are again confronted with a fine fabric of half truths and more-than-half lies, posing as the ?neutral? and ?objective? account of the G8 blockades.

Sheer urgency precludes a response to all the details of this nebula of falsehood. We have prisoners to defend, lungs to decontaminate and good stories to tell. However, one illusion that needs to be dispelled right now is the ritual separation between ?good? and ?bad? protesters, manufactured yet again by the corporate media in all its sensationalist glory. Le Matin, celebrating its greatest achievement to date in the art of rabid inflammation, tells us in a blood-red headline that ?the black blocks destroyed the dream of the pacifists? in Lausanne. Have they ever considered the possibility that the two share the very same dream? 24 Heures rushes to quote the rehearsed and predictable denunciations by the self-appointed ?leaders? of the ?altermondialistes?, that ridiculous cadre of middle-aged, middle-class, white, male opportunists, most of whom might as well be picking the scraps from under the banquet table in Evian. As if to enforce this image, pictures of masked ?casseurs? are faced, on the opposite page, by the smiling faces of their holier-than-thou categeurs. And Le Temps, in the most shameless show of superficiality, characterises the ?casseurs? as anarchists and fascists at the same time, as if two such diametrically opposed ideologies could coexist in any space of political expression. And so on and so on, as it has always been, lies without end, amen.

Enough of this farce.

This declaration of solidarity is written by friends who participated in the non-confrontational parts of Sunday?s blockades in Lausanne. We are speaking in our name only, not in the name of the Aqua or Pink and Silver blocs, which have disbanded. Still, as far as the stupid divisions created by the corporate media go, we would definitely be perceived as the kind of ?good? protesters that they so like to cuddle.

We want to say the following, loud and clear:
For us, the only division worth talking about is that between the people of the world and the masters of death and exploitation. The only ?ring-leaders? that need to be exposed, isolated, and removed from their position of menace to society are George Bush, Vladimir Putin, Tony Blair, Silvio Berlusconi, Jacques Chirac, Gerhard Schröder, Jean Chretien and Junichiro Koizumi. Our determination to disrupt their yearly feasts of power is matched only by our contempt for that other handful of losers in suits who, instead of fighting for the starving millions of the global South, came to Evian in order to kiss the hands of the torturers.

The blockades were undertaken by a very large number of people, with different expectations and sensibilities. But it was abundantly clear, at least to us, that everybody was agreeing to operate in full solidarity. This was made clear not only by the written declarations of the different blocs, but also from the abundant will to coordinate our fluid actions on the ground. The fact that some of us chose not to engage in highly confrontational tactics (whether for reasons of principle or of prudence) does not mean that we automatically refuse to cooperate, and defend, those who did choose higher levels of confrontation. We are constantly looking for ways to live with our differences, so as to continue acting together for a world of freedom, justice and peace.

We challenge the corporate media to reproduce a single quote or sound-bite from Sunday in which someone who actually participated in the Lausanne blockades denounces another participant.

There is talk of fascist infiltration of the various black blocs. Since Genoa these claims have become certain people?s knee-jerk reaction to high levels of confrontation, but we are prepared to look at the facts. Indeed, from what we saw on Sunday in Lausanne, there was an enormous presence of fascists on the streets. They were all wearing police uniforms. These thugs almost killed one activist, directly beat and tortured hundreds, and left thousands more injured: bruised by rubber bullets, traumatised by concussion grenades and poisoned by highly potent chemical weapons. The corporate media subsumes, under the single category of ?violence?, (a) the occasional erection of a barricade and its defense with a few bottles and sticks, and (b) the continuous assault on unarmed masses of people with tear gas, flash-balls and icy gushes of water laced with pepper spray. This is an insult to human intelligence, even if the latter is as low as that of corporate journalists, Leninists and cops.

All the blockade actions that took place in Lausanne had the clear objective of obstructing the arrival of G8 delegates. The difference was only in tactics. A clear dimension that they all had in common, however, was the reclamation of our urban spaces. Whether this is done through a sit-in, a street party, or symbolic assaults on corporate property, we have the common goal of cleansing our living space from its contamination by capitalism and the state. We want our streets back, but we are tired of asking politely: we just take them.

Finally, we find it absolutely preposterous that the media is willing to play this divisive game after seeing the amazing levels of solidarity that were present during the police repression of activists in the Bourdonnette camp on Sunday afternoon. For long hours in the blazing sun, surrounded by fully armed police, protesters who earlier in the day had oriented themselves to vastly differing levels of confrontation all maintained a non-violent, collective resistance to the police?s attempts to intimidate and isolate us. We were constantly making decisions together by consensus, chanting slogans in each other?s languages, freely sharing among us the precious little food, water and cigarettes that we had, and protecting people that we had never met before from arrest and brutalisation as if they were our own family members. We simply cannot believe that the journalists who saw this happen were not blown away by our level of cohesiveness and strength. We know that we were.

To sum up: you can talk all you want, but for us the G8 blockades were a master-class in revolutionary solidarity. They were the creation of a movement more united than we have ever seen it in our lives. We have discovered, together, that the colours of resistance can combine in a beautiful rainbow if we just try. Let the sounds of samba and breaking glass harmonise, because this movement has something stronger than guns. It has a memory.

It is our own actions and just our own actions which we control. We do not control the actions of others. When we choose to act non-violently in confrontation it is our choice not to add to the evil of violence in the world. It is no guarantee that we will receive a non-violent response in return. There is no such "right". The response of "the other" is their choice to make.

Successful non-violent tactics are sort of like a dance, a "soft" style of martial arts where by delicate "contact" one does not allow the violent opponent room to strike. IF done correctly, the opponent will be in a position of moral ambivalence and will (usually) CHOOSE to respond without violence. If done incorrectly, if you cannot place the opponents in such a state where they feel uncomfortable resonding to you violently, if the opponents are just as sure of being in the right as you are, you may be crushed without compunction.

If anybody imagines the above to be a suggestion that using violence is better they are crazy.

The commentator is an italian jounalist working for Rai, the italian state television.

The quality is quite poor.

To the end you can (hardly) see the activist fallen on the ground, and then you can see the other activist hanging from the rope held up by the people on the motorway bridge.

Watch it and weep. As ceasars Rome burned, so shall the empire of the minority rich burn. None shall sleep until the emperors golden city burns. You don't complain about the indiscriminate violence of the stormtrooper police protectors of the rich and powerful statesmen elite. Yet you whinge and whine when the status symbols of the empire of the rich few are destroyed and laid to waste. Watch now the glory of violence, the fire dancing to the sky, the broken glass, overturned vehicles and designer shops of the elite ransacked and wrecked. As the people masked return to the poor what is rightfully theirs, this earth and the precious coveted loot of the rich. As the rich and powerful lay waste the third world poor, we bring to the rich vultures RETRIBUTION.

The violence of the stormtrooper armed police protectors of the exclusive elite powerful few against ordinary unarmed masses is very disturbing and sick. The violence of unarmed protestors against the property and status symbols of the ruling elite few is a BEAUTIFUL and heartwarming sight.

QUOTE:When we choose to act non-violently in confrontation it is our choice not to add to the evil of violence in the world. It is no guarantee that we will receive a non-violent response in return. There is no such "right".
ANSWER: Actually there _is_ such a "right" in most of our societies. This "right" is defined in law with specific punitive sanctions described for those who violate the right. It is considered to be an immoral and criminal act under most legal codes for one citizen to initiate a non-violent response to another. Usually it is called "criminal assault". That's what the piggy did to the climber: criminally assaulted him.

QUOTE:Successful non-violent tactics are sort of like a dance, a "soft" style of martial arts where by delicate "contact" one does not allow the violent opponent room to strike.
ANSWER: Whatever, go polish up your chakra and wrap your kundalini a little snugger. The most succesful non-violent tactics in history have been those which were bolstered by their opponents fear of massive retaliatory violence: e.g. Gandhi, Martin Luther King. They were the more acceptable "soft" option which their opponents chose in preference to the "extremist" poles.

SUMMARY: Your simple moralizing misses the central point and attempts to deflect criticism from the criminal actions of the police.
