Why won't Labour fight the latest Double tax???

I'm from the South Dublin County Council Area. I am also a key member of the Refuse Charges committee in that area too. The Labour Party has refused to publicly call for mass non payment of the Double Tax, or actively involve themselves in the campaign to abolish it. This is a disgraceful attitude, and one which must be condemned wholeheartedly.

Also read the 'Waste Management Strategy' document on your website, not one mention of the Double tax Refuse Charge -why??

So Labour, whats your excuse for refusing to get involved with the working class of Tallaght in it's fight to abolish yet another hated double tax?>

Meme you idiot, the lone anarchist commenting on the Galloway story in the link you provide actually wrote "the way the alegations have come out does look HIGHLY suspicious BUT still I'd be much more on for waiting and seeing"

But of course for you we must jump to the dear leaders unconditional defence! To do otherwise is to attack him!

In a surprise move today the SP attacked labour.

SP sources claim that this attack was a direct criticism and not, I repeat, not, a chance to heap scorn on labour, while at the same time showing how fine the SP are.

The SP are committed to fighting the bin tax, and merely wanted to shame the labour party into playing a role in the campaign. They denounced claims that articles like this are nothing but sectarian back fighting and point scoring.

In an unrelated statement a member of SP also announced that all labour members were big poofs, and Pat Rabbitte looks like turnip and smells like one too.

To be honest i couldn't tell you much about party decision in South Dublin County Council Area.

In Sligo we have constantly opposed the re introduction of Bin Charges while the conservative parties such as FF, SF and FG have increased charges, or more recently privatised the refuse service.

A lot of this boils down to central govn as you know and the resources allocated to regional government. Strong effective local government and reform of local govn is LP policy.

One of the parties’ policies and a policy based in EU Environmental directives is the idea that the polluter must pay. Again this argument can only be part of a comprehensive waste management strategy, which off course should include recycling facilities. On top of this the big polluters in Ireland, i.e. business, commercial and agricultural polluters should be forced to pay their fair share. Until this is the case i would argue that working class people shouldn't be forced to pay an extra tax. But the SP should really be looking beyond the initial argument and draw a link with recycling and environmental policy, to the polluter must pay scenario, people have to realise at some stage this can't go on forever.

Only around 3% of waste comes from Householders. The vast bulk of waste deposited in landfills is not actually Domestic waste, but rather commercial waste such as hundreds of tonnes of builders rubble etc.

The Government placed a 1% increased on peoples PRSI in 1983, to pay for local services, after they had 'abolished' local rates. They since Tried to bring rates back in in everything but name, by 1st trying to impose the Water charge on us, and now the Refuse Charge. Under the agreement reached in 1983, the councils were to be allocated X amount of money from peoples extra 1% PRSI contribution. Last year, for example, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council only 48% of the money legally owed to them, under this agreement, from the state coffers. We are NOT the polluters, and as a result of our extra PRSI top up, we ARE supposedly paying for improved local services. Instead the government reudces Coropration tax, and tries to screw the working class folks once more!

LY member from sligo - It is shocking alright that they are trying to charge ye E550 per annum approx to collect your rubbish. Does it cost over 3 times as much to collect the rubbish in Sligo than it does in Dublin? -I think not!!

The fact is, that in the Dublin area, Labour have thus far refused to get actively involved in the 4campaigns against the Refuse Charges. In South Dublin Councty Council area, the chairman of the Refuse Charges campaign has TWICE written to both Pat Rabbitte, asking him to publicly call for mass non-payment of the charges, and to call on him & his members to get active in the campaign - Do you condemn them for not doing so??

It is good to see people getting genuinely active in their respective campigns against services charges, whether they be from Sligo, Kerry or Dublin. My hat goes off to them, no matter what organisation they belong to. All the campaigns are open to any person, from any organisation to join, so long as they are willing to play an active role in it. This point is always stressed at public meetings on the Issue held in the SDCCC area, and I've no doubt it is also made at the other campaigns' meetings.

The only time the CWI ever held power anywhere was in Liverpool. They implemented cutbacks rather than resign from the Labour Group.
