Toll of deaths, injuries and human rights violations continues to rise under Israeli assault

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday April 09, 2003 11:45author by kokomero Report this post to the editors

Before the Iraq war began, there were widespread fears that the Israeli army would take advantage of a time when international attention was elsewhere and step up its campaign in the occupied territories. These fears seem to have been well founded given the increasing toll of deaths, injuries and human-rights violations in occupied Palestine this week as Israel takes advantage of the war in Iraq to avoid the glare of publicity on its butchery of Palestinian civilians.

Israel has killed another 3 people have been killed in a raid in the northern Gaza Strip bring the total to 10 today. The raid came hours after an air strike which killed seven and injured over 40 people in Gaza city.

Residents said two Israeli F-16 planes flew low over the city just before the air strike. A few minutes later, helicopter gunships went into action. Witnesses said a missile fired by an Israeli warplane appeared to be aimed at a car travelling thought the east of the city, but it also damaged nearby houses.

There were scenes of pandemonium as ambulances rushed casualties to hospital. The remaining dead and wounded were civilians, said doctors, including children hit by shrapnel from the second missile, which exploded after people had run into the street to see what had happened.

Ghalem Shehaiber, a 16-year-old with shrapnel in his back from the attack, told reporters in al-Shifa hospital how he was standing near by, at the Askoula circle, a landmark. "I heard two missiles fired. I rushed to the scene."

What Mr Shehaiber claims happened next is disturbing. A large crowd had gathered around the wrecked car. "After a short time, maybe two minutes, two more missiles were fired at the crowd." Mr Shehaiber and another witness, who declined to give his name, claimed that it was at this time that most of the wounded were hit.

Further news from occupied Palestine today includes an explosion in a Palestinian school in the northern West Bank wounded dozens of people.

Last week more than 1,000 Palestinian men and boys were rounded up and trucked out of the Tulkarem refugee camp in the West Bank at gunpoint. The Isreali army said they were only forced out to allow soldiers to search their homes, and all the men and boys were allowed to return home after three days. But the experience unnerved many Palestinians.

Complete disregard for non-combattants is a feature of Israeli tactics for instance last July, nine Palestinian children were killed when the Israeli air force dropped a one-tonne bomb into a packed area of slum housing in Gaza City in the middle of the night on a mission to assassinate Saleh Shehadeh, a leading Hamas militant.

It's the same old, same old moronic stuff.

The Israel Defence Forces actually take a lot of care to avoid civilian deaths. Generally, in that kind of strike, it is called off 9 times out of 10, because of the presence of civilians in the vicinity. I know this for a fact, because I have been there when the targeting is done. However, when you are fighting terrorists who circulate and hide in crowded urban centres, there is just no way to avoid civilian deaths. War is just not precise. In any case, if we hadn't taken out those Hamas leaders, how many more innocent people would have died inside Israel? Like all good military organisations, we take the battle to the enemy.

Don't for a moment imagine that Israel rejoices in any way shape or form in the deaths and injury of Palestinian civilians. It is totally tragic - ALWAYS. We are trying to defend ourselves from facist murderers.

Unlike you Avi I am not going to whinge about being called a moron, as I think we all see through your childish riposte.

Perhaps you should study somebody elses history and learn from it instead of navel-gazing and droning on incessantly about your own people's past.

It is actually naive to think that your problems can be solved by eliminating your enemies in this way. By killing innocent civilians your government is acting as a recruiting sargeant for Hammas and we in Ireland know this only too well.

This type of tactic has failed again and again in the rest of the world only you are too blind to see it.

Eventually you will have to make peace with your neighbours as you will eventually become a minority within your own borders, better to do a deal now while you are ahead.

So you've been there when "targeted" murders have been done. Very interesting, the mask slips, I suppose you've been there "nine times out of ten". As for Israel not rejoicing over civilian deaths, I seem to remember slimboy Sharon gloating over a great victory in the successful assination of a Hamas leader, which also killed children.

As for Israel having a good military organisation, don't fool yourself, as the Yanks put it when Israel invaded Lebanon (No so-called coaltion against terror needed there eh?), it was a fourth rate army taking on a seventh rate one.

In what capacity have you been there when the targeting is done, Avi?

Avi levels the charge of anti-semitism, racism and idiocy with ease at those whose only weapon is the written word which they use to disagree with him.

These are fine words from a man whom, by his own admission in this thread, has taken part in the murder of his political opponents and innocent civilians whom he considers to be "animals" to quote some of his past postings on this site.

What sort of credibility or value does any opinion pronounced by such a man have?

You can try to post your propaganda on foreign websites and hope to shift the scales in favour of the hard line Israeli point of view. And who knows, maybe you'll fool some people. But you can't fool me because I have lived in Al-Quds surrounded by Israelis. I have known a few and spoken to many. After all my travels accross Europe and the Middle East, I can safely say that you are by far the most arrogant, mean, and inhumane people. Not everyone of course, but a vast majority of Israelis are like that. That's right, I know your kind you little shit. All four million of us in Palestine know you. You can kill people with your American artillery, but you can't kill the truth.
