Diversity kitsch is all around us. But as the grim fact forcefully confronts us that some immigrants hate their hosts so much they want to murder and rape them, David McGrogan senses that it is at last falling from favour.

Anti War movement in Ireland steps up a gear.

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday April 04, 2003 01:24author by IMC Report this post to the editors

The IAWM Dail blockade last night was the occasion for the first direct confrontation between protestors and Gardai in the Capital since the start of the second Gulf War.

The Public Order Unit moved in in an attempt to disperse the crowd . Using non violent resistance some protestors blockaded the front entrance to Dail Eireann in protest at our governments involvement in the War on Iraq. Ugly scenes followed, including the hospitalisation of two protestors . The protest finished when the Public Order Unit retreated following negotiations with IAWM leaders and left wing TDs . Fr Iggy, a long standing peace activist, condemned the protestors behaviour on RTE Radio 1 , while The Minister for Justice defended the Police tactics . Images of Socialist TD Joe Higgins being manhandled by Gardaí were transmitted on RTE and featured in many newspspers.

Meanwhile former Army Commander Edward Horgan today began his high court appeal against the governments continued policy of allowing US military use of Irish facilities, most notably Shannon Airport . The challenge argues that this policy is a breach of the Irish constitution , and the case is being followed closely by the mainstream media .

INDYMEDIA CORPORATE MEDIA?
by IMC LOVER Fri, Apr 4 2003, 8:49am
Why so many links to RTE interactive ect. on the main page? We dont give a F**K what they think, that why we you this excellent site. If we wanted the usual LIES AND SEECULATION ill watch Sky or other such crap. Dont lower your standards, to theirs! If anyone wants to know what the Sun thinks, then they can buy one, this is supposed to be an alternative.

Anyone who can use a computer the internet and google can find that crap for themselfs

There will always be exeptions to this rule if somethings important, but, Indymedia has enough of its own reports which are much more intresting.
Keep up the good work IMCers

We didn't have footage of Joe Higgins getting man handled RTE did, and I wanted to show how mainstream press are covering Horgan case in comparsion to Dubskys Report.

If this offends your sensibilities I'd advise you to write your own feature.

Apologises for the broken links, I'll repair them shortly.

Hi Editors,

Thanks for your work. I know these things are written by tired and maybe bruised people late at night. But I'm concerned by the implications in the way you have phrased things.

"The IAWM Dail blockade last night was the occasion for the first direct confrontation between protestors and Gardai in the Capital since the start of the second Gulf War. "

What's the difference between a direct confrontation and an indirect confrontation?

Why do you want to call it a "confrontation". why not call it civil disobedience, sit - in, NVDA? The purpose of the protestors was to protest the war and the Irish government's support for it, not to "confront Gardai".

Was the CW occupation not a confrontation by your wording (and therefore this wasn't the first)?

What's this "the Capital"? It is a more important place?

"The Public Order Unit moved in in an attempt to disperse the crowd ." This is pure police speak. Normal people say "Gardai in riot gear (or "riot police") started dragging people away."

"Ugly scenes followed, including the hospitalisation of two protestors . " Passive voice? Who was responsible for ugly scenes? do you mean "Gardai treated people roughly/aggressively and two protestors were hospitalised as a result?" or "Protestors attacked Gardai who fought back and two protestors were hospitalised as a result"?

Okay one at a time.

"The IAWM Dail blockade last night was the occasion for the first direct confrontation between protestors and Gardai in the Capital since the start of the second Gulf War. "

Why do you want to call it a "confrontation". why not call it civil disobedience, sit - in, NVDA? The purpose of the protestors was to protest the war and the Irish government's support for it, not to "confront Gardai".

Because of turn of phrase? Frankly you want to write the features your way, join editorial and do it yourself. Until then I'll call it a confrontation. To wit the crowd were ordered off the road by Gardaí, they refused, and sat down, therefore directly opposing the Gardai.

Or would you rather we submit all features to you to approve the language beforehand???

Was the CW occupation not a confrontation by your wording (and therefore this wasn't the first)?

Actually I'd forgotten about that, thank you.

What's this "the Capital"? It is a more important place?

Oh for fucks sake....

"The Public Order Unit moved in in an attempt to disperse the crowd ." This is pure police speak. Normal people say "Gardai in riot gear (or "riot police") started dragging people away."

"Ugly scenes followed, including the hospitalisation of two protestors . " Passive voice? Look you disagree with the phrasing and terminalogy of a feature, fine here's the url

Join the editorial list all features must be submitted to editorial, that way you can nitpick to your hearts content.

Going to join my fellow IMCer and heave my desktop out the window.

{aesthetics and drama}

hospitalisation-
the blood is generally real.

I have spent much time in hospital and know that people there do not look their best.
Those "in hospital" or sick, wounded, dying, ill, giving birth, recuperating, comitted or corpses.
There also hypochondriacs they practise the "peaky" look.
Those who work in hospital are almost all overworked and underpaid except for consultants and managers.
Consultants grimace.
this not pretty so they too are part of the uglyness of hospitalisation.

With reference to my question on Friday about your body count tally on the main page:-

"Body Count?
by Anonymous Fri, Apr 4 2003, 8:31am
Does the body count, account for all deaths as a result of this war?
Layout seems good."

Thank you for your reply:-
"civilian deaths only
by I shot JR Fri, Apr 4 2003, 10:13am"

But is there any way you could change the count to include all deaths as a result of this war, or is there no information available for this?

You could always have a seperate counter for civilian deaths if you wish to distinguish between the two.

Best regards...
