Over 3000 people at tonight's Anti-war demo

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday March 20, 2003 22:09author by Genevieve Carberyauthor email gen at bluewho dot com Report this post to the editors

Over 3000 people were at tonight's anti-war demonstration at the US embassy. There were many passionate speaches from many including Michael D Higgins(Labour), Kieran Allen (Socialist Worker) and Patricia McKenna (Green Party) as well as a young Libyan child who spoke on behalf of the children of the Middle Eastand. After speeches and chanting the crowd marched to the British Embassy where there was more chanting and then a minute silence to reflect the silence in Baghdad tonight as they wait for another night of bombing.

lets cover the walls of the embassies etc with red paint or ketchup or whatever - blood on their hands

Not all your chants and protests and eloquence will have the slightest effect. Ahern has majority support in the Dail for his policy allowing Shannon to be used for the US war effort. Ireland's political and economic interests are best served by this policy. Morality has nothing to do with it. Its time for the anti-war movement to examine its tactics, and strategy, and take a hard look at Ireland's place, economically, politically and culturally in the bid of Anglo-America for world dominance.

That is an amazing story, Not that I recommend firebombing anybody !!!!!. Cant believe I never heard it before. Where you there? what was the media/political/peoples reaction. We have a history of aggressive rebellion and civil disobedience but now we have, um, ah bertie.

ps. sean your subservient cynicism helps to keep others in a stagnant position. what is your motivation, purpose or view? do you have one?(heart or brain) can you not be sufficiently outraged to say something about it?. what would make you stand for something? (beyond sports!!)

no one mentions the speeches (which btw was just explaining to people why they had bothered to head out to the embassy) lasted nearly 1hr 20mins, in that period, the 1500 (lets be realistic, or at least learn to count) was reduced to 1000 as at least 500 people decided that standing around an embassy listening to carreerist "politicians" and so called "socialists" was not worth their time. And can someone please explain to me the value of walking to the British embassy when there was no one at home?

but hey it wasnt all bad, the sinners managed to cover the entire demo with their placards, the swp and sp im sure got a few new recruits and probably made a killing(monetarily) on the suffering of the iraqi people through a paper sale bonanza...

absolutely rediculous is what i would call that demo...

more blockades of the dail i think!

Stop whinging. All this bitchy bickering about this party and that party just annoys the f*** out of me. Demonstrations serve a purpose just as other forms of protest do, sorry if you find them SUCH a bore.

The anti-war movement has clearly failed in its attempt to achieve its objectives. Tactics have to re-addressed and redefined. It is clearly evident that peaceful protest has achieved nothing. The anti war movement leadership should resign and a new leadership should be installed with clear timelines to achieve goals. The fact that Shannon airport has been offered for use to the war machine is a clear indication on how ineffective the anti war protest has been.

Sean - where is your morality? - Its very easy to be cold and dispassionate whilst sitting in the relative safety of your home /office - if these where your people, your family being incinerated and destroyed would you still have the same cold and dislocated view of current events. bollocks to economics - I would rather be penniless than have innocent blood on my hands, a view that I hope my young children will also carry in life

Someone once said... all it takes for evil to prosper is that good men do nothing. Any action you as an individual take which you honestly believe to be the right thing to do, is worth doing. There are a lot of forces out there persuading you to just watch the tv, or the football, or the lotto, or whatever. Don't wait for someone else to act, if they act it will be on their beliefs, not yours. Ireland is sinking fast, perhaps it is too late for this generation?

I have come across this idea elsewhere on indymedia (Portuguese site)... millions of people taking to the streets for a day of protest marching still barely lasts as news on the telly on the following day... the mass media is owned and run by mass murder-supporters and news is featured by puppet brained reporters... massive organisational effort coupled with emotive timing are needed to make any protest happen at all... SO HERE IS A SIMPLE SOLUTION TO GET PAST THE DEADLOCK OF MEDIA CONTROL AND GET THE MESSAGE OUT TO SHOW THE WORLD WITH A SHORT SHARP SHOCK ...

to get together a small band of smart and concise co conspiritors and make a simple plan of action... to target a national media TV and/or radio station/regional office... and stage a take over for a few hours or indeed for many days and nights... hard to know how long such a move might last.. but even 5 minutes would get a lot of well researched truth out and about on the air before being closed down... and a closed down TV station is sensational news and amazing embarrassment for Big Brother Inc.

this idea is non violent direct action
to reclaim the media is not too far removed from a Reclaim the Streets but has far more wide spread effect

this is how the portuguese revolution started on 25 of April 1974 at 3 o'clock in the morning - by taking over the media to get rid of the fascist regime of Marcelo Caetano... by playing forbidden songs on the radio so - people would know that the revolution was truly under way...

History in the making...

A good point. Tactics need to be changed. Democrqcy does not exist in this country. The Dail needs to be ignored. It should have no legal binding upon the citizens of this country as it does not represent us. Time to forget non violent direct action. It's getting us nowhere. Those FF/PD ministers who voted didn't vote the way the Irish people wished. They voted on behalf of themselves and maybe some corporate interests. They should therefore be held personally accountable for their actions. Following on from this, if there is another anti war march then this march should go to Aherns house up in drumcondra and protest there. The time for violent mass civil disobedience has arrived.

You're dead right. The time for revolution is very much upon us and the governement have no interests beyond their own continued greed and power. We should burn Bertie's house, see how he likes it. Hows that for refuelling Ahern ye gobsh*te.
