It is sadly true that many of those countries and former states did not boast an exemplary record in enviromental affairs.
It is also sadly true that because the priority was their lack of an exemplary record in human, civil, urban and other rights, that we really didn't learn that much about them.
It is sadly true that we learnt (mostly) nothing about them.
It is most certainly sadly true
that ecological disasters occur regularly.
so...
talk about this, talk about Exxon Valdez, talk about the Erika, talk about every one.
talk about "prestige".
