Liberals go home (and take your fascists with you) The so-called Anti-War Movements of all the countries dithering over /when/ to escalate the murder of Iraqis are a shambolic coalition of hypocrites and do-gooders. Until we sort out clearly that 2nd UN Resolution or not, Iraq should not be invaded, sanctions should cease and Turkey should be prevented from oppressing Kurds further, we are doomed to failure. We've seen clearly the pro-State policies of liberal groups like the Peace And Neutrality Alliance, the Green Party, the Labour Party and others. We've seen their willingness to savage the brave souls that are willing to engage in Non Violent Direct Action. Those groups and others are stating quite clearly that they do not support the US invasion of Iraq _if_there_is_no_second_UN_resolution !! This implies that they are perfectly OK with the murder of Iraqi civilians as long as the UN Security council can be bribed or coerced into supporting the US. Unless more principled sections of the "anti war movement" are willing to make clear http://www.counterpunch.org/giombetti03142003.html their opposition to this then they stand the risk of diluting their message and contributing to the lies and doublethink. |

Bluto, you dont work within a complex and fragile peer-orientated 'construct' such as the UN. You can say what you like without any foresight or consideration for anything.
I imagine if you were sat in the security council chamber you would be eaten up and spat out. You have a centralised view of the difficult 'goings-on' within the UN. For many countries and diplomats the contiuation of the UN is far more important than the persuit of self-interest. Im sure many go in with the notion that this is the best we have so lets persue it.
I reckon that many in the UN realise that the US will go to war anyway and if the UN arent involved what way will it go. They need to have some leverage in the way the world is run even if that means following somebody like bush to war. Keep your eyes on him.
things are bigger than fuck the UN. Fuck war.
I have no doubt I'd be eaten up and spat out at the UN. It's a structure that facilitates powerful men from powerful countries. So it doesn't represent or help me. So fuck 'em.
Your post demonstrates perfectly how and why the UN will never work. It can only be a rump of bleating liberals trailing after the fascists of this world.
What point is the continuation of the UN if it cannot stop war? How can it stop war as it is presently constituted with it's undemocratic division into Sec.Council members and the General Assembly?
It is those like yourself that would follow Bush to war to ensure the continuation of a structure that cannot prevent war that are the very means of the undoing of the original purpose of the UN.
The UN, like any other representative body, cannot initiate moral change, it can only operate to rubber stamp the decisions that result from what the citizens of this world LET their governments get away with.
Appealling to those government's morals within the structure of the UN is proven to be the wrong way to effect change and enforce morality.
Fuck the UN. Take the streets.
Can you explain how 'taking the streets' can have any plausible effect without diplomatic structures such as the UN to try and filter each countries peoples concerns wishes and dreams. They may not speak for you directly but you probably forget we live in a big world with diverse political and non-political opinions.
Yes there are elements of the UN structure which are despiciple(?) but maybe the internal power struggles will oust some of the economic power holds. When you say fuck the UN you also say fuck the huge humanitarian and peace-keeping structures that the UN represent. It is a fact that the UN are a trusted structure of diplomacy by virtue of its multilateralism and that cannot be denied.
I stand on the side of grassroots activism but I realise co-operation is better than weak anarcho-ranting your Take to the streets call has the same emotive hollowness as Bush's roundabout declaration of war. sorry.
